  4. Frank Zappa explains the decline of the music business

disabled comments so Zappa can actually speak for himself - shut up, all of you

A MESSAGE TO INFOWARS: I would just like to say that it is appalling that Infowars (Paul Joseph Watson, specifically) used a clip from this video in some of their recent propaganda. Of course, I obviously do not approve of this usage, and I am guessing neither would Zappa. This video does not exist to advance your agenda. This video does not exist to spread hate and racism. It exists to document Zappa's displeasure with the direction of the industry, and nothing more. I almost regret uploading it because it has been hijacked by people who use it to spew the fallacy of 'all music is terrible now' (something that has been said in every generation, and it is never true). Granted, I had this mindset at one point. I was also in high school. Sometimes you have to grow up and realize that things change. Culture changes. Music changes. The industry is still broken, not because of the art but because it is still run by the same people who were in power three decades ago. These are the same young executives Zappa describes. They are the white baby boomer Grammy voters who are quick to write off anything unfamiliar. They are the people who keep your favorite songs off of YouTube, and guilt you for using perfectly legal streaming se…

  6. What’s more important than looking good?

I always thought that if I have the body that I wanted, I would be happy.

That every time I took off my shirt or every time I look in the mirror, I would feel good about myself.

    I was wrong.

I learned that what’s more important than having a great looking body is the way we feel inside. Are we feeling joy and happiness every day when we wake up and looking forward to the day OR are we always bogged down with worries and stress so much that it seems normal?

I use to think it's normal to be stressed every day, to have constant worries. That's just life.

Now I have a different take on life. I now realize that there is another way to live. And that we can wake up every morning feeling excited and happy for the day to come. It starts off by getting rid of the stress and fear that’s inside of our body.

The emotional baggage that is inside of our bodies will always make us feel negative emotions and that becomes our normal point of view.

People think they have a reason to get mad, get worried, get jealous, get stressed, but what they don’t realize is that all reasons are made up.

  7. The End of History’ Revisited | Francis Fukuyama

Frank Fukuyama's 1992 book "The End of History and the Last Man" had profound and lasting impact with its declaration that science and technology, the growing global economy, and liberal democracy are leading history in a quite different direction than Marx and Hegel imagined. In this revisit to those themes, Fukuyama examines conflict with and within Islam, the need for a diffuse form of global governance to deal with problems like climate change, and the deeper implications of biotechnology.

"'The End of History' Revisited" was given on June 28, 02007 as part of Long Now's Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world's leading thinkers.
