  1. Design a Shadow for Social Impact: Cameron Tonkinwise at TEDxArtCenterCollegeOfDesign

Cameron discusses the problem of consumer citizenship and how our values can, and should, influence the market place.

Cameron Tonkinwise's research and professional activities integrate the philosophy of design with a concern for sustainability. His work focuses on the design of commercial and nonmarket systems for shared product use, exploring how the emerging discipline of service design might facilitate the development of less-material-dependent economies. In his current research, Mr. Tonkinwise is investigating perceptions of convenience and autonomy in shifts from ownership to usership.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  3. Bertrand de Jouvenel - On Power B. 00-01 Introduction & Metaphysics of Power

Documenting the process by which government and controlling majorities have grown increasingly powerful and tyrannical, Bertrand de Jouvenel demonstrates how democracies have failed to limit the powers of government. This development Jouvenel traces all the way back to the days of royal absolutism, which established large administrative bureaucracies and thus laid the foundation of the modern omnipotent state.

On Power is an important work that Professor Angelo M. Petroni of the Luigi Einaudi Center for Research in Torino, Italy, has said is "simply a book that no serious scholar of political science or political philosophy can afford to ignore." Bertrand de Jouvenel was born in Paris in 1903; he traveled widely, becoming an astute observer of British and American institutions. Later in life, he was an author and teacher, first publishing On Power in 1945. Jouvenel died in 1987. Among his other books, besides The Ethics of Redistribution, are Sovereignty: An Inquiry into the Political Good (1957) and The Pure Theory of Politics (1963).

  6. Elyse Holladay - A Working Theory of Components

Throughout history, our tools have affected how we understand the world. In our young industry, our tools, needs, and processes are constantly changing. We build sites and frameworks and components with the tools we have at hand. As we do, we discover problems, invent solutions, and then invent new tools.

Design Systems are our current model of making sense of the intersection of front-end code and design. With the tools we have today, what is our working model of a component? How do we define them, create them, and ensure they work at scale? In this talk we’ll discuss how our tools affect our understanding, create a checklist of factors that make a component a component, and how to implement the theory of components with the tools you have at hand.

Presented by Elyse Holladay at Clarity 2017 on November 28th.

  7. Cap Watkins - How to VP

A very common question I get, whether at a conference, on a panel or even from people I work with at BuzzFeed, is what my day-to-day work is like as a VP of Design. Since no one week or day is exactly the same, I've historically had trouble answering this question. No more!

In this talk, I’ll detail a full, actual week of being a VP of Design at BuzzFeed, along with some lessons I’ve learned in my role that I have found to apply broadly to leaders across all levels of an organization.

Presented by Cap Watkins at Clarity 2017 on November 28th.

  8. Back Rooms and Dark Rooms: HIV Lurks Within!

From his HIV diagnosis in 1985 until his death in April of 2009, Cass Mann was one of the world's longest-term HIV-positive survivors. He founded Positively Healthy, the UK's only HIV/AIDS charity staffed exclusively by openly gay men, which provided HIV services including education, support, and peer counselling. These videos now archive his wisdom and insight for future generations. Here he talks about how back rooms and dark rooms contribute to the spread of HIV. Back rooms and dark rooms are stand-alone clubs or rooms attached to bars or pubs that have no lighting and where people have anonymous sex with people they can't even see in the dark. When you can't see your partner, you can't make any judgments about your potential partner. You can't tell if they appear healthy or are obviously ill. You can't make an informed choice. Back rooms and dark rooms may be a major venue for HIV transmission today. For more information, visit http://www.AIDSvideos.org/.
