    Here is what I tell my peers in IT and business on documentation myths and what one can do about it.

    1)Architecture documentation (any documentation for that matter) helps all projects – one man or 1000 man project. Agile or waterfall!

    2) Documentation is a habit one should get into from the beginning. Excuses and temptations are plenty to skip documentation, overcome them!.

    3) Documentation is not for non-technical staff, nor for dummies! Your work is not over until it is documented for future reference for maintenance!

    4) Old habits die hard! Start with good habit! Document enough for the project – one page or 100 pages, you decide. This is ART!

    5) Documents I created over many years were extremely helpful to me [yes, I find my documents extremly helpful after 1 year] and to others, saving bunch of time, $$$ and head ache!

    6) Just Do It! Someone will thank you in future even if you are not around. Leave a great legacy!

    Christina Elmore The urge to document is at the root of many bad presentation habits.

    Despite a renaissance in the art of presentation - think TED Talks, Nancy Duarte, Prezi, and Ignite — we still experience more bad presentations than any lifetime deserves. Even with compelling content and conquered nerves, a presenter’s visual materials can totally tank a talk. And documentation is often to blame.

    The real culprit is a conflation of documentation and presentation. Many slide collections end up being an awkward mash-up of the two, and documents suffer when we force them into the mental model of a presentation. (NASA and the military offer striking examples of these failures.) Why have the differences between documentation and presentation been lost? How can we make better sense of these two forms to create more engaging presentations and better documents?

    Louise speaks to us about her experiences as a wheelchair user and her career as a music journalist and blogger.

    Louise Bruton is a Dublin-based freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in The Irish Times, the Sunday Business Post,, The Huffington Post and the Irish Independent. Primarily, Louise is a pop fan, avid tweeter and a music journalist but when she’s not writing about music and festivals, she is writing about access and life in a wheelchair on her blog Legless In Dublin.

    Since Legless started in 2013, Louise has appeared on Today FM, Spin 103.8, RTE Radio 1, 2FM and TV3’s Ireland AM to discuss disability and access in a straight-forward and honest way with the smallest dash of humour. She recently took part in TEDMED’s event in San Francisco and is delighted, as a DCU graduate, to take part in TEDxDCU.

  10. ‘Nuff Said: Comics as Design Documentation

    Storytelling is a fundamental part of game design, but game documentation is notorious for being dry, distant and generally unreadable. Our documents should ignite the creative fire in our teams, provoke conversation and help everyone on the project understand the vision of the game. We can make our documentation more powerful by using some of the principles native to comic art. Framing our designs as player narratives ensures that we design for people, not users, and the visual presentation of information that is the basis of the comic form allows us to put our designs to the test quickly and cheaply, before burning precious development time.
