We talk a lot about building “digital services so good, people prefer to use them”; but we don’t often talk about the people who are going to run those services.
These people are very important. They’re in charge of building, then maintaining, services that meet user needs and the criteria set out in the service standard. Government is going to be hiring a lot of service managers in the coming years, as the work of digital transformation continues.
So what’s it like being a service manager? What sort of things does a service manager think about all day? What’s inside a service manager’s head?
This week: we’re live from The Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, CA with Dan Auerbach, Hilary Hahn, Robert Finley, Fiona Apple, and Nick Offerman.
This week: we head west for our first tour show of the season, live from The Pasadena Civic Auditorium in sunny Pasadena, California. As befits a visit to Tinseltown, it’s a star-studded affair, with a blast of Nashville-tinged rock ‘n’ roll from Dan Auerbach and his band; and violin virtuosity from Hilary Hahn, including a few Bach pieces with Chris Thile. Also with us: all the way from Bernice, Louisiana, gospel-soul-blues-man Mr. Robert Finley; and one of the most mesmerizing singers your ears will ever behold, Fiona Apple. If that weren’t enough, we’ll be treated to wit and wisdom from comedian, actor, author, citizen, and woodworker Nick Offerman. We’ll also have a new Song of the Week and a final batch of October musician birthdays from the host and our band (singer Madison Cunningham, music director Rich Dworsky on the keys, bassist Paul Kowert, drummer Ted Poor, Sean Watkins on guitar, and Gabe Witcher on fiddle); and we’ll celebrate Halloween with a selection of spooky scenes featuring our Royal Academy of Radio Actors (Serena Brook, Tim Russell, and Fred Newman). Tune in this Saturday as we roll two hours of red carpet radio straight to your favorite listening device!

A company like Pinterest has millions of transactional emails to send to people. The scalability challenges of sending high volumes of email mean that it makes more sense for most companies to use an email as a service product rather than building their own.
Chris McFadden is the VP of engineering and cloud operations at SparkPost and he joins the show to explain the architecture of SparkPost’s email as a service product. SparkPost started as an on-premise email technology for large enterprises, and evolved into a SaaS product. In 2014, the company migrated to the cloud, which has changed its infrastructure as well as its operational model.
