  1. The Interview Results Capture Meeting (Hall Of Fame Guidance) | Manager Tools

This cast explains how to capture interview results in a fast and simple meeting.

One of the things we have learned over the years is that bad hiring is easy, and good hiring is hard.

It’s easy to hire someone who isn’t going to work out - just do one interview, don’t dig for details, don’t listen to the doubts you’re feeling, don’t interview for the soft skills.

Of course, this is what happens far too often…and then when there are culture or discipline problems, everyone starts talking about changing the culture, or doing exit interviews.

But the answer lies in smarter — and harder — hiring.

In this cast, we share a simple way for a hiring manager to make a decision about a candidate.

You’ll probably hear a surprise or two, so listen in … and you’ll also hear Horstman’s Law of Bad Hiring!

This cast is one in a series to be called How to Hire, which is part of our larger set of series on Managing Talent.

  2. My Boss Resigned - Part 1 | Manager Tools

This cast describes our guidance as to the actions to take when your boss resigns.

Some time ago, we produced a three part cast called How To Resign. It’s a long series, because our recommendations take six weeks. When your boss resigns though, you often only have a week or two to come to terms with the idea and prepare yourself for the interregnum, the undefined amount of time where you have no boss, and the coming of the new boss. Whether you love or hate your current boss, change is always unsettling. Taking action within your circle of influence will make this time less difficult and allow you to potentially benefit from the change.

[By the way, for those of you who have been through this before, and perhaps the transition wasn’t handled well, don’t assume it’s always that way. Take heart. The fact is there are some companies who do succession planning well, and when a manager announces she is leaving, it’s almost already agreed to who is going to fill their role. Succession planning at all levels (even if it’s just an executive having a back up plan in her desk) helps when a boss resigns.]

Here are some basic things you can do to prepare for the transition professionally.

  3. Developing Internal Relationships (The Where) - Part 2 | Manager Tools

This cast concludes our discussion on a framework for looking at where you need to develop internal relationships.

In our Build A Network cast, we told you that more relationships were better and to develop relationships with people indiscriminately. That guidance still stands. But whether you’re new in your organization, or you recognize that you don’t have the depth of relationships you need, the whole organization is a big target. This cast will help you narrow down where you want to direct your energies.

Equally, this cast will help you assess how good your network is. We’re going to give you a framework to put your current relationships in. Once you’ve done that, the gaps will be clear - and so will the relationships you need to develop.

  9. MaxFunCon: Merlin Mann on Doing Creative Work; The Sound of Young America | Maximum Fun

He doesn’t fully grasp what the seduction community is about, but there is truth in what he says.

For example, the Mystery Method fully deserves to be crapped upon and one can empathize with Merlin even if one doesn’t agree with him wholesale.

He’s an insightful guy, if you cut him some slack on this topic.

The "community" can handle it, really.

And let’s be honest: most guys in the "community" are bumbling fools who don’t understand the first thing about real self-improvement—even if there are exceptions.

    Anyway, Merlin’s thesis remains valid.

It doesn’t require tearing down others; he just chose to dismantle his own (somewhat true) concept of the "community" to illustrate what to do better.

That’s what we should all be focusing on anyway: how can I do better?

    How can you?
