  1. Toilets, bowties, gender and me | Audrey Mason-Hyde | TEDxAdelaide

Why is it so important for us to know someone else’s gender? We live in a gendered world, but for Audrey, gender is fluid at best an uncomfortable construct. Is there a way to be less reliant on gender in our interactions with people? And what does this mean when it comes to the clothes we wear, or even which toilet we choose to use? If you met Audrey Mason-Hyde, you might think Audrey was a boy, which isn’t quite correct, but calling Audrey a girl doesn’t feel quite right either. At 12 years old, Audrey is already an accomplished actor with film and TV credits, including 52 Tuesdays, a film that won the Directing Award at Sundance Film Festival and the Crystal Bear, judged by the youth jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. With a fierce intellect and a unique sense of style, Audrey has plenty to say about our gendered world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  6. Mathematical Challenges to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution

Recorded on June 6, 2019 in Italy.

To comment please go to https://www.hoover.org/research/mathematical-challenges-darwins-theory-evolution-david-berlinski-stephen-meyer-and-david

Based on new evidence and knowledge that functioning proteins are extremely rare, should Darwin’s theory of evolution be dismissed, dissected, developed or replaced with a theory of intelligent design?

Has Darwinism really failed? Peter Robinson discusses it with David Berlinski, David Gelernter, and Stephen Meyer, who have raised doubts about Darwin’s theory in their two books and essay, respectively The Deniable Darwin, Darwin’s Doubt, and “Giving Up Darwin” (published in the Claremont Review of Books).

Robinson asks them to convince him that the term “species” has not been defined by the authors to Darwin’s disadvantage. Gelernter replies to this and explains, as he expressed in his essay, that he sees Darwin’s theory as beautiful (which made it difficult for him to give it up): “Beauty is often a telltale sign of truth. Beauty is our guide to the intellectual universe—walking beside us through the uncharted wilderness, pointing us in the right direction, keeping us on track—most of the time.” Gelernter notes that there’s no reason to doubt that Darwin successfully explained the small adjustments by which an organism…

Service Description —————————————————— What is a soul? All through this political season, I have heard people from both sides saying that this election is “a battle for the soul of the nation”. How do we know when our souls are healthy? I believe that our souls are incomplete throughout much of our lifetimes. I believe that the yearning all humans have for a deeper connection to and experience of life relates to our soul’s need for meaning and our search for pieces of our soul that we have lost. How does that relate to this election? In my reflections this week, I will use a Buddhist koan to further confuse the issue — because a koan does not give us answers. The point of a koan is to leave us with more questions than answers….Where have you heard that before? Yes! That is a part of our Unitarian Universalist tradition — we are often proud of the fact that our faith tradition is more about questions than answers.
