Durch einen tragischen Fehler der Hebamme litt Rosemary, das drittälteste der Kennedy-Kinder, bei ihrer Geburt 1918 unter Sauerstoffmangel, ihr Gehirn wurde geschädigt.
Rosemary war als Kind liebenswert, fröhlich und hübsch, aber in vielen Dingen langsam, in ihren intellektuellen Fähigkeiten beschränkt. Als junge Frau wurde sie reizbar und zunehmend aggressiv. Der Patriarch der Familie schämte sich für seine Tochter, die so anders war als ihre Geschwister. Ohne Wissen seiner Frau ließ er Rosemary im Alter von 23 Jahren einer grauenvollen Operation unterziehen, bei der durch ein Loch im Schädel bestimmte Gehirnareale mit einem Messer zerstört wurden.
Durch diese so genannte Lobotomie verschlechterte sich Rosemarys Zustand dramatisch. Sie konnte nicht mehr sinnvoll sprechen, kaum laufen, wurde apathisch. Die Familie sperrte sie weg, wenn auch stilvoll. Rosemary Kennedy verbrachte über 6 Jahrzehnte in einem exklusiven Pflegeheim, bis sie 2005, im Alter von 87 Jahren, starb.
