  1. Cory Doctorow with Rebecca Giblin on author incomes, copyright and the book industry

Author, activist and journalist Cory Doctorow sits down with ARC Future Fellow Rebecca Giblin from Monash Law to discuss the rapidly changing book industry.

Author incomes are plummeting. What opportunities do we have for improving them? Could Doctorow’s ‘Shut Up and Take My Money’ platform be part of the solution?

  2. Philosophy, Fantasy, and Science Fiction: Introduction to the Series (lecture 1)

This is the first session in a new series of monthly lectures and discussions by Gregory B. Sadler, spanning the year 2016 and hosted by the Brookfield Public Library. This year the series focuses on philosophical themes in the works and world of selected classic and contemporary fantasy and science fiction authors.

We begin the series by examining the genres of science fiction and fantasy. We then discuss central fields in philosophy and how they can illuminate key themes in literature. After that, we turn to main elements of narrative, and focus in on the worlds that successful narrative works create. I also provide an overview of the series as a whole.

4:55 - motivations for creating this series

8:00 - the genres of science fiction and fantasy

23:12 - introducing philosophy to the conversation

39:21 - elements of narrative, the issue of world-building, and philosophical themes

    59:56 - Q&A and wrapping up

  3. Threshold: The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny (Volume 1)

Today I’m discussing Threshold, the first volume of the Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny. This is mainly about the three famous stories it contains: "A Rose for Ecclesiastes", "The Doors of His Face, The Lamps of His Mouth", and "He Who Shapes".

Two things I don’t really address in the video: Who IS Roger Zelazny? And where should you start with his works? He was a hugely prolific, highly-acclaimed SFF writer from the 1960s to the 1990s. If you’re new to his work, I wouldn’t start with this collection. Instead I’d recommend the Chronicles of Amber (the first five books are the best, IMO, though overall maybe not the best impression of his writing skills), This Immortal (my personal favorite, also known as "…And Call Me Conrad"), or Lord of Light (for something really based on mythology).

  4. The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark | Review

I loved this novella! Please excuse how many times I say "fun" instead of consulting a thesaurus for more word choices.

  5. NBn: An Education in Politics: The Origin and Evolution of No Child Left Behind by Jesse Rhodes

Jesse Rhodes‘ book An Education in Politics: The Origin and Evolution of No Child Left Behind (Cornell University Press, 2012). The book synthesizes nearly forty years of US political history. It tells the story of the development and passage of the No Child Left Behind law by George W. Bush. The book builds on political science theories of political entrepreneurship, institutionalism, and incrementalism to narrate the debate about education reform. Rhodes captures the people, the organizations, and the institutions that have defined education policy since the 1980s. The book is accessible, thorough, and a must read for scholars of education politics and policy.
