  1. Oral History of Mark Mothersbaugh

Interviewed by Chris Garcia on 2017-11-13 in Los Angeles, CA X8389.2018 © Computer History Museum

Mark Mothersbaugh co-founded the pop music combo Devo at Kent State University in 1973. For the 18 years, they would release many seminal albums exploring themes of de-evolution, technology, post-modernist de-humanization, often with a satirical bent. Devo worked heavily with synthesizers and digital-analog hybrid systems to create a signature sound that influenced many bands of the 1980s and 90s.

Following Mothersbaugh’s work with Devo, he would become a regular composer of scores for film and television, including working on programs such as Peewee’s Playhouse, Rugrats, and many of the films of director Wes Anderson. His music makes use of electronic instrumentation and production techniques. He is also credited as one of the first composers to create a score specifically for a video game. Mothersbaugh founded Mutato Musika in 1989 to create music for film, television, and video games.

Mothersbaugh has also been a life-long artist and printmaker. His works, both traditionally and digitally created, have been printed in books and displayed in museums around the world.

  2. Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies: Burn It With Fire (Nicholas Weaver)

The entire cryptocurrency and blockchain ecology is rife with frauds, criminalities, and tulip-mania style hype and needs to be properly disposed of into the ashes of history. A “blockchain” is just a horribly inefficient append-only file which costs a literal fortune to secure without actually providing meaningful distributed trust, while cryptocurrencies are provably inferior than actual currencies for legal real world transactions. Beyond the sheer uselessness have emerged a whole host of bad ideas, ranging from the “put a bird^H^H^H^H blockchain on it” hype to unregistered (and mostly fraudulent) securities with “Initial Coin Offerings” to an invitation for massive theft in the form of “smart” contracts.

It is time for those ideas to die.

The first step to disrupting this space is simply knowledge. This talk begins with a summary of why just about the entire space is effectively useless at best and downright malevolent at worst. But there is also room for targeted responses. There are opportunities for criminals to greatly step up their activity in ways that will result in massive profits to them but have the collateral effect of disrupting the underlying cryptocurrencies. On the legal front, governments already have sufficient legal authorities needed to effectively cripple the cryptocurr…

  5. Lena Reinhard: Works On My Machine, or the Problem is between Keyboard and Chair

You’ve heard it before: "It works on my machine" and you know the punchline "so your problem isn’t real". Sometimes a bug just won’t appear on your system: computers are fickle beasts full of subtlety. Humans too, but more so: we have habits, preferences, biases, and our background, opportunities vary wildly. And even the technology industry itself is a perfect example of legacy spaghetti code (without unit tests), and this makes it very hard to debug for a better future.

In this talk we will look at the many facets that affect our decision making and interactions, and work out how we can change for the better. Together, we will take a look at the effects that our software has on the daily lives of the thousands of people who are using it. You’ll learn what you can do as an individual to support change into a positive direction, and how you can help debug this system and make a difference in the tech industry. You’ll leave knowing about practical things you can do in your daily life to make the tech industry a better, more inclusive and diverse environment that is a better place for everyone.

Trigger Warning: Mention of assault, abuse, rape and death threats, rape, racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, abuse. Discussion of harassment.

  6. Caroline Sinders: When algorithms fail in our personal lives

„Social Media Break Up Coordinator“ is a performance art piece and lecture performed by Caroline Sinders. Inspired by Facebook’s memories algorithms faux pas, such as parents being reminded of their child’s death, or of events with an ex.

  7. Lena Reinhard – “A Talk About Nothing” | .concat() 2015

This is nominated for the "Conference Talk of the Year" in the .net awards 2015. Vote for it here: https://thenetawards.com/vote/talk/lena-reinhard-a-talk-about-nothi/

Lena Reinhard closed the first ever .concat() web development conference with “A Talk About Nothing“ on March 7th 2015. https://conc.at/

Note from the speaker: Based on feedback after the presentation, the better term for "transsexual" or "transgender" would have been "trans", "trans people" or "trans folks". I’m sorry about using inaccurate terminology.

The abstract: In this talk, we will explore nothing.

And, yes, literally nothing. Together we’ll take a look behind the curtains of reality and explore some of the underlying rules that shape our existence. We will dig into ancient philosophy, the history and today’s status physics and maths, look into the origins of computing, programming and analyse the way we develop software today. We’ll see how nothing influences us, how it shapes our behaviour every day and how nothing can help us grow – in our professions and, even more, as humans.

“Nothing really matters,”, Freddie Mercury wrote in a song that was released 40 years ago. I want to show you how right he is. https://conc.at/#talk-a-talk-about-nothing
