  1. Gilbert House Fellowship #158: 2 Chr 28; 2 Kings 16-17; Isaiah 13-14 | Gilbert House Fellowship

ALREADY BUT not yet. That’s a phrase we use often when discussing Bible prophecy, and it’s appropriate again this week.

We discuss the destruction of the northern kingdom, Israel, by the Assyrians as punishment for abandoning the LORD. Then we look at two chapters of the fascinating Book of Isaiah.

In chapter 13, Isaiah prophesies a bitter end for Babylon, which God decreed would be a desolate place, a haunt for “wild animals,” “howling creatures,” and “wild goats” — the se’irim, or goat demons (translated “satyrs” in the KJV), to which the Israelites offered sacrifices in the desert after leaving Egypt (see Leviticus 17:7).

Remember, Isaiah prophesied the destruction of Babylon between about 740 B.C. and 686 B.C., more than a hundred years before Babylon overthrew Assyria. Nebuchadnezzar eventually defeated Judah and sacked Jerusalem in 587 B.C., taking the southern kingdom, Judah, into captivity.

And then we come to the famous 14th chapter, where Isaiah references the fall of the divine rebel from the garden, Helel ben Shachar (“Lucifer, son of the morning” in the KJV). We discuss the mysterious “shades” of Sheol who greeted the fallen Day Star, the identity of the divine rebel, and the prophetic significance of the “the mount of assembly

in the far reaches of the north.”

  2. Gilbert House Fellowship #157: Revelation 14-18 | Gilbert House Fellowship

FALLEN, FALLEN is Babylon the Great!

Who or what is Babylon the Great? After 2,000 years that’s still a mystery. We discuss the seven plagues and the seven bowls of God’s wrath, the mark of the Beast, the spirit behind the Great Prostitute, and the nature of the terrifying seven-headed, ten-horned Beast.

  3. Gilbert House Fellowship #156: 2 Chr 27; Isaiah 9-12; Micah | Gilbert House Fellowship

GOD’S JUDGMENT on Israel and Judah was not going to be pleasant, but it was not to last forever.

This week, we read prophecies of Isaiah and Micah on the coming destruction of the northern kingdom by Assyria and the southern kingdom by Babylon. But we also get several clear prophecies of the coming Messiah, who would gather the remnant of Israel and rule the nations from his throne in Zion.

  4. Gilbert House Fellowship #155: Revelation 10-13 | Gilbert House Fellowship

TIMES WILL be hard during the seven-year period called the Great Tribulation. You don’t want to be here for it.

This week, we discuss the two witnesses, the dragon and the rumble in the parking lot of heaven, and the beast that emerges from the sea in Revelation 13. The identity of the Beast has been the subject of speculation for two millennia, so we’re not going to solve it here. The takeaway from the study of this book is that God has an endgame strategy and it will succeed. Please — be on the winning side.

  5. Gilbert House Fellowship #154: Amos 1-9 | Gilbert House Fellowship

HE HADN’T intended to be a prophet, but that’s the work to which the Lord called him. Amos, a contemporary of Isaiah, was a shepherd from south of Jerusalem in the kingdom of Judah. However, he devoted most of the nine chapters of his book to warning the northern kingdom of Israel about its imminent doom — a judgment decreed by God.

We discuss the prophecies of Amos against Samaria, highlight the fascinating difference at the beginning of Amos 7 in the Septuagint translation.

Here is the link to the article “The Cosmic Mountain and Trees In Old Testament Theology” by Dr. Michael Heiser. And here is the link to the article from the Institute of Creation Research about the earthquake of Amos. According to the article, “the earthquake in question was at least magnitude 7.8, but more likely was 8.2. This magnitude 8 event of 750 B.C. appears to be the largest yet documented on the Dead Sea transform fault zone during the last four millennia.” Wow! No wonder Amos mentioned it. It would have been an event that nobody who’d lived through it would ever forget!

  6. Gilbert House Fellowship #153: Revelation 7-9 | Gilbert House Fellowship

GOD’S JUDGMENT on an unrepentant world is the focus of this week’s New Testament study.

John was shown terrifying imagery of disasters so catastrophic that the earth is literally shaken to its core. But take heart — the church of Jesus Christ is not appointed to wrath, so if you have accepted Christ as your Savior, you won’t be here for it.

We discuss the first six trumpet judgments, speculate on why Dan is not among the tribes of Israel sealed by God during the Great Tribulation, briefly explain the 70 weeks of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27), and explain why Joel’s Army (see Joel 2:1-11) is actually the horde of demonic locusts released from the abyss by Apollyon (Apollo, also called Abaddon — called Resheph by Canaanites and Nergal by the Babylonians) in Revelation 9.

  7. Gilbert House Fellowship #152: Isaiah 1-8 | Gilbert House Fellowship

PROPHESYING DURING a time just before a calamity has to be one of the worst jobs ever. Isaiah was called to be a prophet during a visit to the throne room of God to preach to the kingdom of Judah, but his orders were to

Make the heart of this people dull,

       and their ears heavy,

       and blind their eyes;

lest they see with their eyes,

       and hear with their ears,

    and understand with their hearts,

       and turn and be healed.

    Seriously, who’d want that job?

We discuss the historical setting of Isaiah’s ministry, the holy mountain concept, and the parallels between the vision of Isaiah and what the apostle John was shown more than 700 years later.

  8. Gilbert House Fellowship #151: Revelation 4-6 | Gilbert House Fellowship

THE FIRST six seals are opened in our study of Revelation this week. Bearing in mind that the meaning of these seals has been debated for 2,000 years, we offer our best understanding of the images and prophecies recorded by John the Revelator.

We discuss the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, speculating that the first rider, often interpreted as the spirit of Antichrist (although some incorrectly believe it is Christ), may be Apollo (AKA the Semitic god Resheph and Babylonian god Nergal; both, like Apollo, are archers and gatekeepers of the underworld). We examine descriptive imagery of God on His throne that pagans used to describe the storm-god of the ancient Near East (Zeus/Jupiter/Baal), and highlight links between what John saw heaven with the throne room imagery in Isaiah and Ezekiel.

  9. Gilbert House Fellowship #150: Jonah; 2 Kings 15; 2 Chr 26 | Gilbert House Fellowship

PRIDE AND repentance are the themes of this week’s Old Testament study. First we discuss the Book of Jonah, a short four-chapter study in obedience to God and His mercy toward those who repent.

Then we look at the kings of Israel and Judah during the second half of the 8th century B.C. (750-700 B.C.), especially Azariah (Uzziah), who led Judah to its period of greatest power and prosperity since the days of Solomon. Unlike the king of Nineveh, who was spared from destruction when he chose to repent in sackcloth and ashes, Uzziah responded with anger when the priests in the Temple stopped the king from burning incense in the Temple. This was a sin of disobedience for which the sons of Aaron were struck dead; Uzziah got off relatively easy with a case of leprosy.

We had some time left at the end of our readings today so we discussed the concept of divine weapons in the ancient Near East. Archaeologists have discovered that pagan temples often contained weapons that were believed to have been wielded by the gods. We talk about the clubs of Hadad (AKA Baal), with which the storm-god defeated the chaos-god of the sea, Yamm, and the mysterious weapon of Dagan. Scholars don’t know what that was, only that it required copper, the hide of some kind of beast, and animal fat. Hmm.

  10. Gilbert House Fellowship #149: 2, 3 John; Revelation 1-3 | Gilbert House Fellowship

The seven churches in Asia (modern-day Turkey)

NOW WE get to the prophetic stuff! The Book of Revelation was written by John, either in the mid-60s A.D. or around 95 A.D. Most scholars believe it was the later date, during the reign of Domitian, although some believe it was thirty years earlier, during the reign of Nero.

Either way, Revelation is a deep and fascinating prophecy given to John by Jesus himself. This week, we discuss the introduction to the book and the messages from Jesus to the seven churches of Asia. All seven are in modern-day Turkey, which may have significance for the last days. We briefly explain how the seven churches represent the ages of church history (see the chart below) and various heresies that had entered the church before the end of the first century A.D.
