  3. What’s the future for Europe? - Guardian Live event

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and an expert panel discuss whether the EU has lost sight of its original purpose. Is it time to for the UK to leave?

Since it was founded in 1957, the European Community has changed beyond recognition. Once a great signifier of peace and a symbol of European cosmopolitanism, relations within the European Union today are stretched to their limits. The 2008 financial crash exposed the brittle foundations of the EU; the imposition of an austerity-bound bailout in Greece revealed its vulnerability to prevailing political ideologies. The ongoing migration crisis shows its failure to agree how to react to the crisis of our times.

Is it time to leave? Or can the EU be reformed?

Discussing the issues with Guardian joint political editor Heather Stewart were self-described ‘erratic Marxist’ Yanis Varoufakis, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and leading figure of the international left Tariq Ali.

  7. Europe is Kaput. Long live Europe! - Slavoj Žižek, Yanis Varoufakis and Julian Assange - full event

    Content warning: adult language.

Philosopher Slavoj Žižek and former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange discuss Europe’s future. With the recent economic crisis in Greece, unprecedented challenges to centralised European policy, and the lack of consensus on the ongoing refugee crisis, many would agree that Europe faces its greatest ever predicament. Slavoj Žižek, regarded as ‘the most dangerous philosopher in the West’ (The New Republic), and Yanis Varoufakis, self-described ‘erratic Marxist’ and economic ‘rock-star’ (Business Insider and other publications), met in Croatia in 2013. They have never appeared together on the public stage – until now. Take your seat to hear them discuss the urgent task of building a different and more democratic Europe. The conversation explores the contradictions of late capitalism and some of the solutions that might just save the European project. It is moderated by Croatian philosopher Srecko Horvat.
