Modern, secular, and progressive advocates have spent generations trying to hammer home the idea that the past is inferior to the present as well as what we can expect from the future and since tradition is backwards oriented, surely, it too is inferior.

And it’s something like that logic that seems to have dominated the Church for generations now especially in how we attempt to relate the faith to the youth. We take a superficial look at what interests kids and then we say, let’s include more of that in Church culture and this will help make the faith relevant for the kids.

And after doing this for 60 some odd years, the only trend we’ve seen is population decline which only seems to be compounded with each successive generation.

But, there seems to be a renewal going on in Traditional parishes. I attend a parish where only the extraordinary form of the mass, also known as the Traditional Latin Mass, is offered and when people find out about that, their immediate reaction is almost alw…

  2. Why Are We Surprised About Marilyn Manson?

Music conducted by Paul Jernberg. Find out more about his work as a composer here: http://pauljernberg.com

Spanish translations by Vélez Translations, http://www.veleztranslations.com

It was recently revealed in the media that Marilyn Manson is something of a scoundrel and everyone seems to be acting like this is some kind of scandal.

But what I find myself wondering is: why is this shocking to anyone. What right do we have to be scandalized by the fact that Marilyn Manson isn’t a very nice person?

What would you think of a person who makes a habit of saying disparaging things about people with a different skin color than him?

You’d probably assume he was a racist. You’d probably assume that the content of his words reflect the content of his thoughts – which is to say, our thoughts precede our words. You can’t create a dichotomy between what you say and what you think. You can’t say, oh that doesn’t reflect what I actually think, I just like to say things like that.

And there’s a very old principle in that which many of you will recognize which is that, “From the heart, the mouth speaks.”

What you say is a reflection of what is in your heart. Your words produce and incarnate expression of what’s in your heart and your mind. This is also true of our actions and decisions. S…

  3. The Worst Atheist Argument

Music performed and directed by Paul Jernberg. Find out more about his work as a composer here: http://pauljernberg.com

If I was going to evaluate what made a bad argument it would be some combination of the fallaciousness and popularity of the argument. If it’s extremely egregious and obviously wrong but also very popular, then it becomes a contender for one of the worst, and this one ranks up there. I’ve seen it in comments on my videos and popular atheist celebrities love to use it. Ricky Gervais famously uses it whenever he gets to exfoliate his atheism in front of an audience, and Richard Dawkins used it in The God Delusion when he said, “We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.” In the context of something like a late night tv exchange, it’s extremely effective because it’s succinct, it carries an air of cleverness about it which makes it, at least, appear to be logical.

As a rhetorical instrument, it hits the right notes, but rhetoric without sound logic is just sophistry. That’s why in a classical liberal arts education, they taught dialectic before rhetoric. You had to have a sound understanding of logic before you could apply persuasive speech to your arguments.
But at some point in history, our …

  4. Credibility of the Catholic Church

Music performed by and generously provided by Paul Jernberg. Find out more about his work as a composer here: http://pauljernberg.com

Christians around the world are commemorating Easter this weekend which is the recollection of the events surrounding the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of an actual historical person named Jesus Christ. This isn’t claimed to be a, once upon a time kind of story, but a definite event recorded by people in history living in a specific place at a specific time who conducted themselves in a way consistent with people who actually believed what they were claiming – even if that meant repeating their story under pain of death – which they did.

This same group of people started a movement and that movement became known as The Church and if these same people never did go out proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the world as we know it would be a very different place.

Whether you like it or not, the influence of the Catholic Church upon the world, especially Western Civilization, is staggering.

The recognition of the inherent dignity of all people, especially the poor, was a novel concept introduced to the civilized world by the Church. The pagan world value…

  5. The Tyranny of Pronouns

Music written and generously provided by Paul Jernberg. Find out more about his work as a composer here: http://pauljernberg.com

I keep hearing these phrases more and more. People talk about their own lived experience and speaking my truth. What people seem to be describing is their subjective perspective as being more important than objective facts.

Now, this is something that philosophers have debated about from time immemorial. Is the truth merely something that we perceive apart from any external reality or is there a real external reality which we perceive and gain knowledge of and must adhere to?

But if we set aside the abstractions of the great philosophers, this has very practical implications which became a real problem for these two pundits as they could not find any ground to agree upon and we as a society are suffering something similar as we attempt to live our lives to a multiplicity of incompatible philosophies.

And this is the problem with insisting that your truth or your lived experience is what matters most – because what happens when your lived experience doesn’t corroborate someone else’s lived experience?

How does a society with a million different lived experiences and perspectives agree on anything? And don’t forget… we DO have to agree on things; a LOT…
