In our third session, we will be joined by author Hari Kunzru to discuss consciousness raising. For Fisher, consciousness raising was a practice to be reaffirmed in the twenty-first century — but it is not without its obstacles. In his most recent novel, ‘Red Pill’ (Scribner, 2020), Kunzru describes a Kafkaesque world where what is raised is self-consciousness, rather than any kind of interpersonal support structure. We will discuss how the horror of self-consciousness leads all too easily to a violent pessimism, and what we can do to counter and undermine these pervasive systems of oppression, both within ourselves and in society as a whole.
Thomas Sowell: Common Sense in a Senseless World traces Sowell’s journey from humble beginnings to the Hoover Institution, becoming one of this era’s greatest economists, political philosophers, and prolific authors. Hosted by Jason Riley, a member of "The Wall Street Journal" editorial board, this one-hour program features insights from Sowell and interviews with his close friends and associates, revealing why the intensely private Thomas Sowell is considered by many to be "one of the greatest minds of the past half-century" and "the smartest person in the room." © 2020 / 1 episode @ 1 hr.

Writers Bloc presents Martin Amis and Steve Martin
Please support authors by purchasing Inside Story and A Wealth of Pigeons from Chevalier’s Books. Both authors will sign a limited number of bookplates for this event.
It’s clear that Martin Amis‘ life has been even more wildly captivating as his novels. In his new book, Inside Story, which he calls a “novelized autobiography.” Amis returns to his great influences in his life– to his beloved friend Christopher Hitchens, to his mentor and literary idol, Saul Bellow, and to the great poet, Philip Larkin. And of course to his father, Kingsley Amis. And there are of course the women and sex.
This novel– or autobiography– which toggles between his real life friends and family, and the fictionalized characters who move his own extraordinary story forward, give us a most direct perspective, a most personal insight via a novel, into who Martin Amis really is. Amis knows better than anyone how to tell a great story. And his Inside Story is full of his searing wit, and wrenching tenderness.
Steve Martin. One of the funniest writers on the planet. One …
Will Self talks about the author J. G. Ballard and how his his novels and short stories foreshadowed the current COVID19 virus pandemic. Will reads from the short story "The Intensive Care Unit" - a future where people are sealed apart from each other into their own houses.
Performing the first movement of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic. Gould’s performance begins at 18:03.
Originally aired on January 31, 1960 on CBS Television as part of its Ford Presents series, this program was entitled "The Creative Performer." The entire show is actually three performances — by Gould, the soprano Eileen Farrell (singing the "Suicidio!" aria from La Gioconda), & Igor Stravinsky (conducting the last three scenes of his ballet The Firebird) — punctuated with scintillating musicological lectures by Maestro-Professor Bernstein, who is arguably the star of the show.
Though I recommend watching the program in its entirety, here’s a time-stamped playlist, in case you’d like to jump to any given section:
- Leonard Bernstein, on the vagaries of score notations: 0:00 - 12:56
- Leonard Bernstein, intro to Gould: 12:57 - 18:02
- Glenn Gould: 18:03 - 27:08
- Leonard Bernstein, intro to Farrell: 27:09 - 33:46
- Eileen Farrell: 33:47 - 38:24
- Leonard Bernstein, intro to Stravinsky: 38:25 - 40:05
- Igor Stravinsky: 40:06 - 51:06
- Closing Credits: 51:07 - 52:24
