  4. Episode 53: What Can You Do — Queers Podcast

Benjamin and Simon sit down intending to record an episode about what individuals can do in the face of structural problems like homophobia, but an article about violence against women sparks a disagreement between the hosts over the question: to what extent can and should we examine individual participation within broad structures of oppression? It’s the most we’ve ever disagreed!

  5. Nukes - Radiolab

President Richard Nixon once boasted that at any moment he could pick up a telephone and - in 20 minutes - kill 60 million people. Such is the power of the US President over the nation’s nuclear arsenal. But what if you were the military officer on the receiving end of that phone call? Could you refuse the order?

This episode, we profile one Air Force Major who asked that question back in the 1970s and learn how the very act of asking it was so dangerous it derailed his career. We also pick up the question ourselves and pose it to veterans both high and low on the nuclear chain of command. Their responses reveal once and for all whether there are any legal checks and balances between us and a phone call for Armageddon.

  6. Episode 105, Susie Ibarra — 5049 Records

Since the early 90s, Susie Ibarra has been one of the most exciting and compelling composer/performers to come through the world of New York experimental music. As a drummer, there is really no one like her, a top notch improviser who turns her kit into a fine tuned orchestra. She’s worked closely with Ikue Mori, John Zorn, Sylvie Courviosier, David S. Ware and many more and continues to inspire drummers all over the world. For this talk, Susie takes me back to her upbringing in Texas, where as a teenager she opened for the Flaming Lips, her early days in New York, and much much more.

  10. Longform Podcast #189: Maciej Ceglowski

Maciej Ceglowski is the founder of Pinboard. He writes at Idle Words.

"My natural contrarianism makes me want to see if I can do something long-term in an industry where everything either changes until it’s unrecognizable or gets sold or collapses. I like the idea of things on the web being persistent. And more basically, I reject this idea that everything has to be on a really short time scale just because it involves technology. We’ve had these computers around for a while now. It’s time we start treating them like everything else in our lives, where it kind of lives on the same time scale that we do and doesn™’t completely fall off the end of the world every three or four years."
