  3. Money & Coronavirus: How much do I need to save right now?

    • How much money do you need right now?
    • My answer: 1 year of emergency fund.
    • Today, I’m going to show you 3 things:

      1. Why you need it
      2. How to build it
      3. The psychology of using that emergency fund
    • Let me show you an example. Let’s say that you still have a job, you have a little bit in savings, but you’re not sure how many months’ of expenses. You just know — hey, it’s $500 or $5,000 or even $25,000. Pretty good, right?

    • Now let’s say 3 months go by, there are more job losses and layoffs. Unemployment goes way up. And it affects you. It’s not personal — remember, I’ve been laid off, too.
    • When there are layoffs, you’re not the only one looking for a job. Millions of other people are, too.
    • This is why you saving before you need it is critical.
    • Let me show you how to build it. First, you need to calculate how much you need. Let’s say I spend $1,300/month, but I can cut $300 off — by calling credit card companies, student loan companies, landlords, and just cutting my spending.
    • Now I know I need $1,000/month. For an emergency fund, That means I should save $12,000 — or 12 months of minimum expenses.
    • I know, I know. Most people get frustrated it will take so long and give up. It’s supposed to take time! Start building now. Cut expenses, and redirect any investments…

  4. The surprising similarities between fitness and finance

2 things that surprised me: 1. How powerful compound interest is 2. Actual portion sizes of peanut butter, almonds, and rice!

Over the past 15 years, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about fitness, food, and finance. There are some similarities among them: - We don’t track per calories/ spending - We eat more than we know/ spend more… - We debate minutiae about IF, keto, Whole 30… just like we debate interest rates and random stocks - We value anecdotal advice and quacks like Dr. Oz…just like we listen to our friends and family members (who have never learned about personal finance)

I talk about them in today’s Fireside Chat!

  5. My 3 money rules during a recession

In normal times, I have 10 money rules: https://twitter.com/ramit/status/1127252972126330880/photo/1

But recessions call for a different set of rules.

During coronavirus, the critical steps to take are: Acknowledge reality, make a plan, and MOVE. https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/blog/coronavirus/
