joeyday / Joey Day

Hi, I’m Joey. I’m a 30-something it professional (read: big nerd) in Salt Lake City. When I grow up I’d like to be a seminary professor (read: even bigger nerd).

There are no people in joeyday’s collective.

  1. What Do I Believe? My 5 Spiritual Truths

Someone asked me what I believe. This is my answer. These are the 5 things I choose to believe and defend. Anything that is not on this list is just my opinion or the opinion of someone else, in my opinion.

  2. “Everything just works out for me” — Jedi mind trick or biblical positive affirmation?

Paul says, "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28). If I love God, can I have full faith and trust in that promise and simply remind myself over and over — even in the midst of trials — that "everything just works out for me"? I think so.

This video explores whether it is a tenable Christian position, a "Jedi mind trick," or both to program your brain to believe the positive affirmation that everything works out for you (because of Jesus).

I end the video with a quote from Gordon B. Hinckley. For some reason, the quality of the video degrades sharply at that point. I apologize!

  3. Is it sin to say “I AM more than enough” as a positive affirmation?

So many people are consumed by debilitating, immobilizing, damning shame and the constant need to prove ourselves to others and to ourselves. We never feel like we are enough. Consequently, we self medicate. We fill our lives with unrighteous desires, money, sex, drugs, food, etc. These bad habits generate even more guilt and shame, and we attempt to hide from the world. It’s a vicious downward cycle, encouraged by Satan.

The antidote is, of course, the atonement and love of Christ. When we fully accept and trust his love and atonement for us, and we turn our lives over to him, He can and does save us from this terrible cycle.

And once we are saved — once we are "married" to him and we have become his people — we are no longer guilty and flawed. He has taken our place on the cross, and we take his place, with all his perfection and flawlessness. At that stage, we must believe that we are enough. If we do not believe that we are enough after that, then we do not have sufficient faith in the atonement and love of Jesus Christ. We are enough BECAUSE of him. And if we are still not enough — if we still lack something — then it must be that the atonement and his love was NOT enough for us.

I address the question of whether Christians should declare to themselves, "I am more than enough" in the …

  4. Can Christians use the Law of Attraction? - Hint: We are all using it ALL the time

This is the second follow-up video to my discussion about Affirmations and the Law of Attraction with Joey Day. The first two videos are linked below.

    #1 https://youtu.be/-k9xux0XZSI #2 https://youtu.be/LFJzAHylWbA

God created the law of attraction as the system whereby we create our own actions and we interpret our own life/world through our beliefs, and our thoughts program our beliefs. Can this law be used unrighteously? Yes! We all use the law of attraction CONSTANTLY. When we sin, we use it unrighteously. When we make good choices, we use it righteously.

Since the law exists—since our thoughts program our beliefs and our beliefs alter our reality—then let’s choose to use the law to bring about much good and righteousness in our own lives.

  5. Did God Create the Law of Attraction & the Tool of Positive Affirmations?

In this video, I discuss the garden of our mind/life, which God gave to each of us, and he expects us to cultivate that garden and to create a beautiful place, with his help. The Law of Attraction (or the Law of the Harvest) works whether we are aware of it or not. It is God’s law for how all garden’s grow; and he provides the increase. The tool of Affirmations aligns with scripture as a way that we can alter our thoughts and beliefs, or plant different seeds in our garden, in order to reap different actions and a different character.

  6. HOW does Attraction REALLY work?

Are "The Secret" and "the "Law of Attraction" REAL? Can I really just think about, focus on, desire, or want something long enough and hard enough that it will just come to me? Wayne Dyer says, "You attract what you ARE." We all do. But what does that even mean? And how can I BE someone different if I’m not attracting the things I want right now?

The truth is, you are attracting whatever you feel comfortable with and worthy of. You are attracting what you subconsciously believe that you deserve and that you are capable of maintaining. If you are not attracting the life that you believe you want, it is because you don’t believe you are capable and worthy of that life. If that life were to show up for you tomorrow, you would reject it via self sabotage. You would say, "this kind of thing doesn’t happen to ME…I don’t deserve this."

Before you can lead the life you want to live, you must occur to yourself differently. You must change the way you subconsciously think about yourself and the things you truly believe about yourself.

When you are truly convinced and subconsciously certain that the life you currently lead is below the life you deserve and the life you are capable of, you will absolutely receive a better life, because you will no longer be comfortable in your current life, and you will seek-…

  8. The Trinity and Gender: The Recent Debate Among Evangelicals

A Dialogue between Dr. Kevin Giles (egalitarian) & Dr. Fred Sanders (complementarian).

These two Trinity scholars — with different perspectives on the evangelical gender debate — discuss recent arguments that an eternal "authority/subordination" relationship exists between the Father and Son, and that it is intended as a model for male-female relations.

For the most recent example of this argument, see the chapters by Drs. Wayne Grudem and Bruce Ware in "The New Evangelical Subordinationism?: Perspectives on the Equality of God the Father and God the Son"

Kevin Giles (Th.D. Australian College of Theology) served as Anglican rector/pastor for forty years, and now writes, lectures, and is an associate in his present parish in Australia. He has been a member of Christians for Biblical Equality since its inception. His publications include "The Trinity and Subordinationism: The Doctrine of God and the Contemporary Gender Debate" (IVP Academic, 2002); "Jesus and the Father: Modern Evangelicals Reinvent the Doctrine of the Trinity" (Zondervan, 2006); and "The Eternal Generation of the Son: Maintaining Orthodoxy in Trinitarian Theology" (IVP Academic, 2012). Kevin’s views on the Trinity and Gender are summarized in CBE’s "Priscilla Papers" 26.3, Summer 2012.

On July 6, 2018, Christ Presbyterian Church of Magna, Utah, hosted a dialogue between Dr. James White and Mr. Alma Allred on the question of whether the LDS church is the "only true and living church upon the face of the earth." Dr. White is the director of Alpha & Omega Ministries and is the author of 24 books, including Letters to a Mormon Elder, Is the Mormon My Brother?, The Potter’s Freedom, and The God Who Justifies. Mr. Allred is an active Latter-day Saint who has served numerous callings in that church, including bishop. For over 30 years, he has taught church history at the LDS Institute of Religion at the University of Utah.
