According to Paul, the spirits of Christians do not go to heaven immediately, but instead Paul clearly in 1 Cor. 15 says they remain dead, and not "alive" until Christ comes. This is specifically seen in verses 22 and 23 of 1 Cor. 15 NIV in the context of verses 20-22. For Paul says the dead in Christ remain asleep until Christ's return at which time they are "made alive," and hence they are dead and asleep until then, i., they are not alive until Christ's return:
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead [i.e. Paul means bodily] the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him [wi…
