  1. Chris Sacca is back! Legendary investor hears pitches & talks Shark Tank, Twitter, politics, more

Legendary angel investor and "Shark Tank" star Chris Sacca returns to TWiST! Chris and Jason sit down to discuss everything from investing in relationships to Jack Dorsey as Twitter’s CEO (now and early on). He talks about what he looks for in an investment, how he met Matt Mazzeo, those early years with Twitter and selling people on the business, and how his dream job involved "a lot of being on the phone, a lot of yelling at people… high risk, high reward." Chris shares his experiences on "Shark Tank," how fun it is to bust the chops (he uses a different term…) of Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary, and how TV could be part of the next chapter of Chris’ life. Chris also listens to pitches from three companies that came out of Jason’s LAUNCH Incubator - Requested, LeadIQ and Benchmade Modern - offering feedback to each of the three founders about their businesses and how to move forward.

  3. 2019 ANTITRUST AND COMPETITION CONFERENCE - DIGITAL PLATFORMS, MARKETS, AND DEMOCRACY

Digital platforms—most prominent among them Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Twitter and Google—are raising pressing policy questions concerning their market power, handling of personal data and influence on global media and political systems. Under the leadership of faculty director Luigi Zingales, the Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State has oriented these questions at the forefront of its research agenda and programming.

In 2017, the Center embarked on an ambitious project to reinvigorate the discussion of concentration and monopoly in the United States, culminating in the conference Is There a Concentration Problem in America? In 2018, the Center again brought together scholars and influencers to consider the market power of digital platforms specifically. From the 2018 conference on Digital Platforms and Concentration a consensus emerged that the issues raised by these platforms must be addressed, and—to provide independent expertise on the appropriate policy responses—the Stigler Center formed a Committee for the Study of Digital Platforms. The Stigler Center’s 2019 conference Digital Platforms, Markets and Democracy: A Path Forward, will discuss the initial conclusions of this Committee.

The Committee’s ultimate goal is to produce independ…

  5. Runnin’ Down a Dream: How to Succeed and Thrive in a Career You Love - Bill Gurley 9/14/2018

In September of 2018, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts on how people should think about their career journey. This is something I had been thinking about for some time, and I am quite thankful to the McCombs School at the University of Texas for giving me the opportunity to share this presentation.

  6. Buddha’s Message: Have Some fun! Bob Thurman

    http://www.scienceandnonduality.com

Bob Thurman delights the audience at SAND 2018 with his lighthearted approach to the wisdom and the message of Buddha. He criticizes materialism, calling it a decision, one which limits our responsibility for our actions, personal and global, by confirming the belief that this is all there is, that there is nothing after life - so it doesn’t matter, because we won’t be here to face the consequences.

    For more information visit https://www.bobthurman.com

Science And NonDuality is a community inspired by timeless wisdom, informed by cutting-edge science, and grounded in personal experience. We come together in an openhearted exploration to further our individual and collective evolution. New ways of being emerge. We embody our interconnectedness and celebrate our humanity.

  7. Pericles’ Funeral Oration — Hear and Read the Full Text — Athens, Greece

Listen to and read the funeral oration of Pericles from Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War. This is the 1881 English translation by Benjamin Jowett. Scholars compare this great ancient and classical speech to the Gettysburg address by Abraham Lincoln.

  8. Consciousness and The Interface Theory of Perception, Donald Hoffman

Despite substantial efforts by many researchers, we still have no scientific theory of how brain activity can create, or be, conscious experience. This is troubling, since we have a large body of correlations between brain activity and consciousness, correlations normally assumed to entail that brain activity creates conscious experience. Here I explore a solution to the mind-body problem that starts with the converse assumption: these correlations arise because consciousness creates brain activity, and indeed creates all objects and properties of the physical world. To this end, I develop two theses. The interface theory of perception states that perceptual experiences do not match or approximate properties of the objective world, but instead provide a simplified, species-specific, user interface to that world. Conscious realism states that the objective world consists of conscious agents and their experiences; these can be mathematically modeled and empirically explored in the normal scientific manner.

In support of the interface theory of perception, I present Monte Carlo simulations of evolutionary games in which perceptual strategies that see the truth compete with perceptual strategies that do not see the truth but are instead tuned to fitness. The result is that natural …

  9. Timothy Heath - China’s New Governing Party Paradigm

For the first time since its founding in 1921, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has adopted a new paradigm for its role in China. Abandoning its former identity as a ‘revolutionary party’, the CCP now regards itself as a ‘governing party’ committed to meeting the diverse needs of its people and realizing China’s revitalization as a great power. To enhance its ability to realize these aims, the CCP has enacted extensive political and ideological reforms. Central to that effort are changes to how the party develops and oversees strategy and policy. Few studies are available on the CCP’s adoption of this new identity and of its political implications. Timothy Heath’s new book, China’s New Governing Party Paradigm: Political Renewal and the Pursuit of National Rejuvenation, remedies that oversight by explaining the historic context, drivers, and meaning of the governing party paradigm.

Timothy Heath is Senior International and Defense Analyst at the RAND Corporation and a recognized expert on Chinese strategy and political-military topics. He served for five years as the senior analyst in the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) China Strategic Focus Group and has over fifteen years of experience in the US government as a specialist on China. Mr. Heath has authored many ar…
