  5. Former Starbucks designer on what makes a “third place” feel like home / Boing Boing

Suppose you wanted to design a home away from home. What would you put in? What would you leave out? What kind of seating would you have? (Soft? Hard? Low? High?) What kind of tables — big working slabs or intimate little two-tops?

A good “third place” may seem casually homey, but its design is the end result of a million tiny decisions. This week on HOME: Stories From L.A., it’s a conversation with Kambiz Hemati, who oversaw store design at Starbucks for two years and now owns Love Coffee Bar in Santa Monica, where he gets to think hard — and think small — about what makes a place feel like home.

Thanks for listening. And if you like what you hear, please subscribe and leave us a rating and/or review on the iTunes Store.

  6. “Getting From Here to There” (Louise Downe, Director of Design and Service Standards for the UK Government at the Government Digital Service (GDS))

PRESENTERS: Louise Downe, Director of Design and Service Standards for the UK Government at the Government Digital Service (GDS). Emma Gasson, Head of Product, Code for America

The U.K. Government Digital Service (GDS) was set up 6 years ago to help government work better for users. Since then, GDS has built, delivered and supported a huge amount - from the single government website GOV.UK to new digital services for renewing passports or registering to vote.

Watch Louisse Downe and Emma Gasson discuss building a new model for delivering public services. One which brings together all the people involved in delivering a service and empowers them with the tools, resources, support and standards they need to help build a better government.

  7. Has the [UK] Government Digital Service been successful?

The Government Digital Service (GDS) was set up to modernise public service delivery in the UK. Has it been successful? And what can other organisations learn from this experience? Former Head of GDS, Mike Bracken, co-author of ‘Digital Transformation at Scale: Why the Strategy Is Delivery’, discussed these questions. He was joined by Baroness Martha Lane-Fox, former UK Government Digital Champion, and Ian Watmore, First Civil Service Commissioner and Former Permanent Secretary. The event was chaired by Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute.
