  2. a16z Podcast: Creating a Category, from Pricing to Positioning

with Martin Casado (@martin_casado), Michel Feaster (@michelfeaster) and Sonal Chokshi (@smc90)

The purpose of category creation, argue the guests in this episode of the podcast, isn’t just about making a dent in the way companies work and changing what people do every day… it’s about setting the price. And with that, comes creating the concept in people’s heads, defining the value, and setting the rules of the game. But when you’re going for a big change, you have to play by the current rules of the game, too.

And to make things even more complicated, theories about how "IT is dead" — or the conviction that companies and departments beyond IT will become empowered through software — are still very much in transition. Somehow we don’t talk about that enough. That means startups need to do everything in two phases: for the now, and for the later and towards two constituencies: both direct lines of businesses and IT. So what does that mean for startups trying to navigate a complex enterprise, including internal debates around build vs. buy? How do you move beyond a few internal champions only? And just how long can a company cash out on founder charisma? In fact, all of these things can give entrepreneurs very confusing, mixed signals about whether or not they have product-market …

  3. Is Design Metrically Opposed? - The Design & Content Conference

Speaker - Jared Spool The world of metrics and analytics has always been at odds with how designers work. Design is a process where we finely tune our gut intuition to create a great user experience. Yet, sometimes, the measures we take indicate a different outcome. Which do we believe? Our gut or what the computers are collecting? In this presentation, Jared will explore the world of measures, metrics, and KPIs. He’ll share the techniques behind Amazon and Netflix’s success. He’ll show how some practices, like the growth hacking approach to increasing Monthly Average Users (MAUs) have hurt the online experience of Instagram and LinkedIn. Plus, you’ll see some alternatives to satisfaction and net promoter score that give insight into the design process and can help designers better tune their gut intuition. SESSION TAKEAWAYS What do easily-collected analytics like bounce rate and time-on-page actually tells us about our users experiences? How do we construct true Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that can predict the future patterns of users? Why advanced techniques, like a money-left-on-the-table analysis and the CE11, show us how much more powerful metrics can be in design?

Recorded live during the Asian American ComiCon Summit on Art, Action, and the Future. We’ve seen so many different kinds of futures unfurl in pop culture, and many of them have people of color and LGBTQ individuals as backdrop and "local color." What would a truly diverse, inclusive and intersectional future really look like? http://traffic.libsyn.com/thenerdsofcolor/AACC2.mp3
