  1. The Future is Fungi: The Rise and Rhizomes of Mushroom Culture

Mushrooms aren’t just in your garden anymore–they’re everywhere, making star appearances in books, movies, TV, graphic novels, video games. More scientific experts than ever before are examining how mushrooms affect human physiology. Social media is awash with mushroom hunters teaching followers how to find and safely eat fungi. Yes, mushrooms are everywhere, but why? What is it about mushrooms that spark our imaginations? Why do they inspire both wonder and terror? And what might their future look like on our ever-changing planet?

On July 11, 2023 Orion Magazine and ASU’s Center for Science and the Imagination joined forces to probe these mycological mysteries with biologist and author Merlin Sheldrake, scholar and naturalist Kaitlin Smith, best-selling novelist Jeff VanderMeer and author and lecturer Corey Pressman. Together they discussed the fascinating and sometimes contradictory ways in which mushrooms are shaping our cultures and our world.

About the panelists: Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and author of Entangled Life, a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, and winner of the Royal Society Book Prize and the Wainwright Prize. Merlin is a research associate of the Vrije University Amsterdam and works with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks and the Fungi Foundatio…

In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at the importance of speculative climate fiction, sci-fi, and utopias for political movements. Specifically, I look at various short stories, films, and books that introduce us to worlds beyond capitalism, that have, in their own way addressed our ecological and climate crisis.

  7. Stop asking what you can DO as an Ally until you watch THIS VIDEO

Stop asking what you can DO until you watch THIS VIDEO

The last few days a number of people have reached out to me looking for support through this current crisis.

What I see in a lot of these folks is a deep desire to engage and a way to make a meaningful difference with these issues.

But what lies underneath this desire to change the world is an unaddressed need for something that will make them feel as though they are aligned with their values.

The message received is that if you don't act you are a bad person. It doesn’t have to be this complicated.

Chances are you’re overcomplicating things to avoid having to do the hard work.

Back in 2014 I had a side hustle of writing about my experiences with race. I've since stopped doing that because it wasn't helping me to actually live the life that I wanted to.

I found myself in a repetitive cycle of realizing how terrible the world is, needing to express my pain and anger, and repressing it until the next time something terrible would happen.

Eventually I realized that I was so reactive to the state of the world I couldn't actually develop a sustainable practice towards living in the world. I only knew how to survive the world I found myself in.

When I lost my job in September 2019 I went on a journey to become a life coach.

    I deve…
