  4. Making Money in Mograph

This is part one of a new mini-series we’re doing here at Motion Hatch called Making Money in MoGraph. We’ll be hearing from people who are making money as motion designers in a number of different and less than conventional ways. Today, I sit down to talk with one of the most well known After Effects tool designers in the industry. Adam Plouff has created some of the most amazing After Effects tools, including RubberHose and Overlord. Before becoming an awesome tool creator, Adam worked in TV broadcast. It was there that he serendipitously fell into his current career. Since then he’s become one of the most prolific After Effects tool creators out there. He’s even been working with Google to make some of their tools. Adam and I talk about what it’s like to sell tools in this industry. It’s difficult to make this a full-time job, but Adam has found ways to make it his. We also discuss how you can find the part of the motion design industry that’s best for you as a freelancer. We end by talking about how to strike a good work-life balance and creating work that still feeds your desire to create without getting bogged down in the business side of things.

Have you made money by creating and selling tools? Tell me about it in the comments!

  5. MK254: Know it For Yourself

Kamala Harris has been selected to be Joe Biden’s Vice President and we air out all of our grievances over the Kamala Harris VP selection, not over the pick, but from the toxic responses within our own faction of the party on this historic moment, with so much at stake. We have the stakes to back up her record, she might not be who you think she is. James is on his Farmer’s apology tour. James went in hard on farmers a few years back, so he’s giving Black farmers, the tribute and respect they deserve as we explore their history from slavery to sharecropping to farming.

  6. ‘Dream Daddy’ and Giant Bomb’s Successful Pivot to Video (Ep. 47)

The Ringer's Ben Lindbergh and Jason Concepcion banter about 'No Man's Sky' updates, mundane objects that look great in games, and Ben's plans for a video game bachelor party (1:20), then bring on their colleague Alison Herman to discuss the summer hit 'Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator,' a Steam game that subverts the tropes of traditional dating sims (8:40). Finally, Ben and Jason talk to Giant Bomb founding member and video producer Vinny Caravella about the origins of the site and how it anticipated trends in podcasting, streaming, and video that media members are still wrestling with today (32:24).
