Because this is a topic that I get asked about so much Ryan Hoover from Fit To Fight and I decided to take advantage of the opportunity we got to spend some time together and do a video discussing what Krav Maga is and the differences between how it is approached here in the States vs. how it is taught in the military in Israel.
The bottom line is that it has to be taught differently for a number of reasons… Most people that go take a self defense class can’t and don’t want to risk serious injuries. We have to go to work tomorrow and can’t just show up with a busted nose and two black eyes. There’s also a big difference in the context, meaning here we learn it for self defense, as opposed to carrying out a military operation so, by definition, we are reacting to an attack, as opposed to being offensive. My biggest pet peeve with how many schools teach it here (even though they aren’t wrong because they are just providing what people are asking for) is that they make it a “move” based system, which it is not. We have to tone it down a bit in the civilian context, but no amount of rehearsed moves are going to take the place of learning how to be very aggressive and taking hits as well.
