  1. David Deutsch - The Beginning of Infinity, Explanations That Transform the World | EP 145

The Beginning of Infinity, Explanations That Transform the World, David Deutsch

1:25 start 13:41 there is no such thing as direct experience; there’s only ever interpreted experience 22:21 businesses are visions; money is just the means to the vision .. not the ends 30:13 shoes as technology; documentary Pants for All; we invent technology to offload perspiration 36:00 "spaceship earth" theory 45:30 paradox of Wigner’s friend

A bold and all-embracing exploration of the nature and progress of knowledge from one of today’s great thinkers.

Throughout history, mankind has struggled to understand life’s mysteries, from the mundane to the seemingly miraculous.

Our guest is a multiple award-winning pioneer in the field of quantum computation and argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe. They have unlimited scope and power to cause change, and the quest to improve them is the basic regulating principle not only of science but of all successful human endeavour.

This stream of ever improving explanations has infinite reach. We are subject only to the laws of physics, and they impose no upper boundary to what we can eventually understand, control, and achieve.

He applies that worldview to a wide range of issues and unsolved problems, from creativity and free will to the origin and…

  4. The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business | Josh Kaufman | Talks at Google

Josh Kaufman spoke to Googlers in Mountain View on February 10, 2011 about his book The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business. He is introduced by Jenny Blake.

About The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business:

"Getting an MBA is an expensive choice: one almost impossible to justify even in a good economy. Even the elite schools like Harvard and Wharton offer outdated, assembly-line programs that teach you more about PowerPoint presentations and unnecessary financial formulae than what it takes to improve a real business. You can get better results (and save hundreds of thousands of dollars) by skipping business school altogether.

Josh Kaufman founded http://personalMBA.com as an alternative to the business school boondoggle. His blog has introduced hundreds of thousands of readers to the best business books and most powerful business concepts of all time. Now, he shares the essentials of entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, negotiation, operations, productivity, systems design, and much more, in one comprehensive volume. The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business distills the most valuable business lessons into simple, memorable mental models that can be applied to any challenge."

  5. Superforecasting | Philip Tetlock

The pundits we all listen to are no better at predictions than a “dart-throwing chimp,” and they are routinely surpassed by normal news-attentive citizens. So Philip Tetlock reported in his 02005 book, "Expert Political Judgement"—and in a January 02007 SALT talk.

It now turns out there are some people who are spectacularly good at forecasting, and their skills can be learned. Tetlock discovered them in the course of building winning teams for a tournament of geopolitical forecasting run by IARPA—Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity. His brilliant new book, "SUPERFORECASTING: The Art and Science of Prediction", spells out the methodology the superforecasters developed. Like Daniel Kahneman’s "THINKING, FAST AND SLOW", the book changes how we think about thinking.

Philip Tetlock is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. With his co-researcher (and wife) Barbara Mellors he is running the Good Judgement Project, with its open competition: https://www.gjopen.com/ for aspiring forecasters.

"Superforecasting" was given on November 23, 02015 as part of Long Now’s Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world’s leading thinkers. The Seminars take place in San Francisco and are curated and hosted …

  7. Full PreFrontal Podcast Episode 137 - David Yeager

    Subscribe: https://www.fullprefrontal.com

“The only thing that could impede me was me“ are the words spoken by Amada Gorman, the first ever Youth Poet Laureate. Amanda for many years suffered from a speech impediment and an auditory processing disorder that made it difficult to communicate intelligibly what her beautiful mind was so eloquently able to construct. Amanda’s personal discovery that I am more than my garbled speech encapsulates the growth mindset which comes into play when hardship looms over and seeing the possibility for a better self or better future turns bleak.

On this episode, David Yeager, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, addresses how a growth mindset injects doubt into that fixed mindset worldview and how a cultivated growth mindset can go on to unravel personal gifts that not only bring joy to oneself but are an abundant benefit to the world.

About David Yeager David Yeager is an experimental development psychologist in the department of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. In his academic research, he examines the causes of and solutions to adolescent health problems, such as bullying, depression, academic achievement, cheating, trust, or healthy eating. He often focuses on adolescent transitions—th…

  10. Balaji Srinivasan: Applications: Today & 2025

Balaji Srinivasan, an angel investor and cofounder of multiple companies including Earn.com and Counsyl, gives an overview of “Applications: Today and 2025.” Srinivasan starts off by tracing the history of crypto from Bitcoin and Ethereum to the present. He highlights the crypto applications that have already gotten traction — infrastructure providers such as exchanges, wallets, and miners; decentralized finance (DeFi) apps; and stablecoins that eliminate the volatility of early cryptocurrencies — and looks ahead to the ones that are likely to emerge in the next five years. These include personal tokenization, new financial instruments, decentralized autonomous organizations and gaming.

Andreessen Horowitz’s Crypto Startup School brought together 45 participants from around the U.S. and overseas in a seven-week course to learn how to build crypto companies. Andreessen Horowitz is partnering with TechCrunch to release the online version of the course over the next few weeks.
