  7. The ‘Backwoods Barbie’ and The ‘Hardcore Troubadour’ - Home | Ideas with Paul Kennedy | CBC Radio

Dolly Parton and Steve Earle would seem to have almost nothing in common. One was born and raised in poverty, but became a pop culture superstar. The other has lived defiantly outside the mainstream and became a dogged champion of the marginalized. They’re also two of the most prolific and influential songwriters working in the American roots tradition. This month on the Enright Files, how artists as different as Steve Earle and Dolly Parton capture the essence of American roots music and speak to the cultural and political currents of the past few decades in the United States.

  8. Spellbinder by TheWeevil

"Dave of stairwaytohell.com liked my Bug Eyes and Galaforce tracks enough to give them some air-time on the stairwaytohell.com news page, and suggested I have a go at doing [the 8-bit BBC Micro game] Spellbinder’s music too. So here it is. Another one just for fun.

"Spellbinder was a game that will ring a bell with anyone who’s played Encarta’s "Mind Maze". You guide your character around a castle solving puzzles and the like while the (eventually irritating) music drones on and on in the background. The music in-game is actually a cover of Midnight Summer Dream by The Stranglers, however I didn’t know this until I’d finished the track and was poking around with a hex editor to find out who did the music for the game. Huge apologies to all Stranglers fans.

"The guitar stuff in this is quite obviously not my own. One very short one-second sample and CoolEdit Pro 2 for some pitch-shifting and I have a quite funky guitar lead, of which I am reasonably proud. Drum lines are of course my own (I feel guilty using drumloops). From 3mins 31secs in, it clearly rocks."

My guest this week is Winifred Phillips.

Winifred Phillips is a composer for video games, television, radio and film. She is a winner of the Interactive Achievement Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, a two-time winner of the Hollywood Music in Media Award, and the winner of several Game Audio Network Guild awards, including Music of the Year.

In this episode, we talk about the future of music in VR games, essential job skills for game composers, the difference between composing for mobile vs consoles, her work on Little Big Planet games and Assassin’s Creed Liberation, why she wrote A Composer’s Guide to Game Music and some of the challenges she overcame to get it done.
