What is the connection between the history of racism and Christian nationalism? On this podcast, Jemar Tisby shares a historical view of white Christian nationalism in America, including how conflations of politics, race and religion in our past continue to impact conversations today. The author of "The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism," Tisby discusses how American Christianity and racism have overlapped for more than 400 years, including examples across several centuries of history. Don’t miss this important conversation to better understand our country’s origins and how we can work together to dismantle the idea of white Christian nationalism.

  2. Episode 35: Little War on the Prairie (Seeing White, Part 5) – Scene on Radio

Growing up in Mankato, Minnesota, John Biewen heard next to nothing about the town’s most important historical event. In 1862, Mankato was the site of the largest mass execution in U.S. history – the hanging of 38 Dakota warriors – following one of the major wars between Plains Indians and settlers. In this documentary, originally produced for This American Life, John goes back to Minnesota to explore what happened, and why Minnesotans didn’t talk about it afterwards.

  5. 044 The Remaking of America during Reconstruction & the Gilded Age

This week at ITPL, the American history podcast, I interview historian Richard White, author of, The Republic for Which It Stands: The US during Reconstruction & the Gilded Age, 1865-1896. In this extraordinary period, industrialization booms, mass migration surges into the West, and the South is reincorporated back into the Union. But it’s also a period of political turmoil, strikes, anti-immigrant sentiment, fear of big business and inequality, and a white supremacist uprising to impose the Jim Crow order.
