  2. Reaction and Revolution: Responses to Domenico Losurdo’s ‘Nietzsche’

Join us for a discussion marking the paperback release of Domenico Losurdo’s monumental study of Friedrich Nietzsche. ——————————————————————————

Recently translated into English by Gregor Benton, Losurdo’s book is epic in scope, covering a wide range of philosophical and historical issues that not only situate Nietzsche in his 19th century context, but addresses some of the most burning theoretical and political issues of our times. Losurdo’s Nietzsche represents one of the greatest examples of Marxist scholarship and criticism, and we will discuss the book’s significance for not only how we see Nietzsche, but how we understand socialist theory today. Losurdo’s Nietzsche shows us that the problems of the 19th century are not over yet. ——————————————————————————

  3. White Skin, Black Fuel: Fossil Fascism and Colonialism’s Inky Legacy

Join us for an urgent discussion on the rise of the far right and what it means for the battle against climate change. —————————————————————————————————————-

Fossil-fueled technologies were born in the soot-covered pits of British colonialism and have held onto their racist legacy to this day. As the burning of carbon makes climate related catastrophe a near weekly occurrence, Fossil capital has of late turned to willing accomplices among the growing far-right to displace blame and defend the status quo. In a world of rising sea levels, scorching temperatures, and crippling droughts, the right-wing in country after country has risen to pin the blame on migrants, Muslims, and other scapegoats as they offer their own solutions to a warming world: close the borders and save the nation from climate break down.

In the first study of the far right’s role in the climate crisis, White Skin, Black Fuel presents an eye-opening sweep of this novel political constellation, drawing out its deep historical roots, and arguing that to confront this crisis requires combating the racist forces of reaction who would enable it. —————————————————————————————————————-

  5. Capitalism and Desire

We live in an age of profound discontent. A discontent that manifests itself in a myriad of often chaotic and conflicting ways. We witness the evidence of this discontent in so many places. To name but a few, we might reference the explosive increase in the use of anti-anxiety and mood-stabilizing drugs, the irruption of protests and riots across the Western World, increasingly antagonistic political divisions, the inflaming of the cultural wars and the rise in people who feel utterly unfulfilled and alienated in their employment.

While these different explosions of dis-ease can be seen to arise from discrete problems, it is difficult to avoid the question concerning whether there might be some fundamental issue at work. An issue that effectively agitates, amplifies and sustains the various social ills we witness today.

With this in mind, I would like to invite you to join me in a close reading of Capitalism and Desire. The book itself is not concerned with comparing and contrasting Capitalism with other socioeconomic systems, nor is it offering an assessment of its moral, political or scientific status. Instead, the book offers us an insight into the ways in which pleasure and frustration, enjoyment and dissatisfaction are manufactured and maintained in the contemporary world.

    By doing this, Tod…

  6. Women, the alt-right and the liberal centre - The Philosopher’s Zone - ABC Radio National

Why do women join white nationalist and other far-right movements? Misogyny is rampant on the alt-right, along with the notion that women’s primary role is to be wives and child-bearers. But the liberal centre can be an ambivalent place for women too. Feminism was founded on the ideal of equality, and on the belief that women should be treated as individuals rather than undifferentiated members of a subordinate class. But have these liberal humanist ideals of of equality and individual autonomy outgrown their usefulness?

  7. Dialogues On Theory - “Schizostructuralism” with Daniel Bristow

We sit down with psychoanalyst Daniel Bristow, author of Schizostructuralism: Divisions in Structure, Surface, Temporality, Class (Routledge, 2021) to discuss his innovative use of Lacanian theory in clinical practice and how Lacan’s ideas can be furthered in politics. In this conversation we discuss what topology is and how it applies to clinical practice, what structuralism is and how Lacan and Derrida and others viewed structuralism, and we look at issues of temporality and class struggle.

"Dialogues On Theory" is a new interview series hosted by Study Groups On Psychoanalysis and Politics and led by Daniel Tutt that explores new thinking at the intersection of politics and psychoanalysis.

"Schizostructuralism" draws together insights from psychoanalytic, structuralist, and Marxist theory, and the divisions and antagonisms that both underpin and distinguish them, to form a new psychoanalytic system.
