  2. Understanding the neoliberal personality — with Samir Gandesha

In the current neoliberal world order, is it possible for authoritarianism to return? When we look to the founding of Germany in 1949, a decision was made to follow the logic of ordoliberalism: to firmly regulate the state through the market so as to prevent a return of fascism and authoritarianism. However, according to Samir Gandesha, the opposite effect happened. In this episode, Samir and our host Am Johal discuss the ‘neoliberal identity’, what contributes to it, and how this impacts our current political world order.

Samir Gandesha is the director of the Institute for the Humanities at SFU and an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities. He specializes in modern European thought and culture, with a particular emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. Recently, Samir has written about authoritarianism and the neoliberal personality, along with other theoretical work. Samir is the editor of the forthcoming publication, ‘Spectres of Fascism’ in 2020 with Pluto Press; co-editor with Peyman Vahabzadeh of the publication ‘Crossing Borders: Essays in Honour of Ian Angus’, forthcoming from Arbeiter Ring Press in 2020; and is also preparing a manuscript o…

  5. Communism will be the collective management of alienation*

with Nadia Bou Ali, Ray Brassier, Dimitra Kotouza, Mattin, and Paul B. Preciado.

The Parliament of Bodies: Communism will be the collective management of alienation* with Nadia Bou Ali, Ray Brassier, Dimitra Kotouza, Mattin, and Paul B. Preciado SEP 5 Workshop 8–11:30 pm Fridericianum, Friedrichsplatz 18, Kassel Live stream available Add to iCal or Google Calendar Previous revolutionary theories thought that it was possible to live in unalienated conditions. However, the question of mediation and how we understand ourselves is being radically challenged today: technology accelerates certain forms of socialization but also shapes our interactions and the way we think; neuroscience challenges the notion of selfhood and computers know more about ourselves than we do. The concept of alienation is back, this time without its connotations of authenticity. What does it mean to be a subject in conditions of real subsumption when our most intimate details are being commodified (from our DNA to our choices and social relations on the internet)? Where is our room for agency? These questions are preliminary requisites in order to answer how we might develop a common idea of what emancipation means. Alienation is a helpful concept because it forces us to ask what is being alienated, what is producing aliena…

  6. Acid Communism - Consciousness Raising w/ classtraitor (Threads*BROOKLYN) - 01-Aug-19

Consciousness Raising w/ classtraitor’s hallucinogenic reading of Mark Fisher’s Acid Communism (Repeater Books, 2018.

Exploring the intersection of music and politics.

During the civil rights movement, socialist feminists formed ‘consciousness-raising groups’, in which people would relate their personal feeling to larger structures and realise that the common problems they faced weren’t their fault. This idea of raised, or ‘higher’ consciousness also has roots in Buddhist and Hindu teachings of the individual self as an illusion.

  7. Remembering Agnes Heller - The Philosopher’s Zone - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Hungarian philosopher Agnes Heller was a Holocaust survivor, a dissident under Hungary’s communist regime, and one of the great modern political thinkers. She was also a wonderfully engaging speaker, and this week we hear her in conversation from 2013, as well as the reflections of a close friend and colleague.

  8. Sprechsaal Interviews, Joseph Vogl - 1.06.2015

Lars Dreiucker invites — enablers, authors and teachers; millers, drinkers and fishermen; theatre folk and the hoi polloi; couch potatoes and cosmopolitans, critics who push buttons, the human catalysts for energy and secretions; artisans and the incurably arty-farty. Centrifugal to the interviews will be matters relating to the question of how these conflicting worlds confluence in one globalized cultural mash-up. Whereas popular interviews seek to discover only the person itself, a modern technician cannot settle for such limitations. The Sprechsaal Interviews will reveal the structures in which our contemporaries live and work. An individual’s commitments and their specific background are, for the most part, difficult to map. But who are the powerful currents flowing through the tributaries of our diverse social spaces? And at which point does deliberate agency acquiesce to the confusing indeterminism of our social matrix? A dialogical photograph can represent a mainstream slice of any society. Your greengrocer can pick out the constraints fettering an entire generation just as accurately as the playwright. The Sprechsaal interviews will investigate the limits to which we can collectively push our own individual boundaries.

  10. Armen Avanessian & Enemies #35: NO MORE DICK SOUP

For decades, people of colour, womxn and other marginalized communities have drawn attention to the violent disparities that continue to persist in cultural institutions. How is it possible, then, that museums, galleries, symposia and other cultural initiatives continue to place such a disproportionate focus on the cultural practice and achievements of white men? The art community, in particular, likes to prides itself on protecting freedom of expression above all other principles. But whose freedom of expression does it celebrate and amplify, exactly? And at what cost to those whose voices are marginalised as a consequence? Can we really grasp and narrate the complex world in which we live, when voices of privilege continue to resonate so dominantly and so disproportionately, effectively sidelining the voices of so-called ‘others’? Are universalist defences of freedom of expression merely an alibi, serving to distract from the urgent and necessary work of transformation that lies ahead, if institutions wish to commit to dismantling existing infrastructural hierarchies and broadening their programming? The aim of this panel is to discuss various possibilities via which to move beyond commonly-used consciousness-raising strategies (as exemplified, for example, in the practice of the Guerrilla Gir…
