  3. Managing Risk and Uncertainty: The Future of Insurance

Human progress is defined by the desire to take risk — whether that’s getting married, buying a home, having kids, getting on a plane, taking a new job, even moving to earthquake country (where this talk originally took place, in Los Angeles, as part of the a16z Summit 2018).

All of these decisions require evaluation under conditions of uncertainty, which is where insurance — really, distributed risk — comes in. So in this talk, a16z general partner Angela Strange describes how pooling risk changes as we reinvent a legacy business like insurance through technology. What’s the impact at an individual, industry, and economy level? And how will new entrants finally disrupt the ultimate game of life?

  4. The End of the Beginning

In his now annual state-of-innovation talk at the a16z Summit in November 2018, Andreessen Horowitz’ Benedict Evans walks through where we are now in software eating the world… and how things may continue to change over the next 10 years.

What’s the state of not just "the world of tech", but tech in the world? The access story is now coming to an end, observes Evans, but the use story is just beginning: Most of the people are now online, but most of the money is still not. If we think we’re in a period of disruption right now, how will the next big platform shifts — like machine learning — impact huge swathes of retail, manufacturing, marketing, fintech, healthcare, entertainment, and more? Especially as technology begins to tackle bigger problems, in harder markets, at deeper (and more structural) levels?

  8. The GE End Game: The Bataan Death March or Resurrection?

GE has had a long and glorious run as a public company. Incorporated in 1892, the company has been a fixture in markets and has changed the way Americans live. However, from its peak in 2001, when it was the largest market cap stock in the world, the company has been on a long ride down, with the deceleration speeding up in the last two years. In this session, I look for pathways forward for the company, by first looking back and breaking the company down into its businesses. I price the businesses to see if it is worth more broken up and then value the businesses to check it can survive as a going concern. I believe that the latter option is the better one, and that if the company chooses to act its age and accept that its growth days are behind it, it is a good investment.
