  1. Extreme Science: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope - SXSW Interactive 2016

NASA has always pushed boundaries in big science and big technology. Right now, NASA (partnering with the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency) is building, assembling, and testing the largest telescope to ever be launched into space: the James Webb Space Telescope. As the scientific successor to the beloved Hubble Space Telescope, JWST will explore uncharted territories in the first epoch of galaxy formation—a part of our Universe never seen before. JWST will also have the amazing capability to study exoplanet atmospheres in unprecedented detail. This is possible due to innovative technologies that push the boundaries of what is capable for spacecraft.

  2. Hacking Language: Bots, IF and Esolangs - SXSW Interactive 2016

At the frontiers of computing and language, new developments are producing shock waves that have yet to hit the mainstream. Automated tweeters relate every word in the dictionary and assemble sonnets out of the metrical, rhyming tweets of others. Interactive fiction connects wordplay and world-building and models the social norms of the Regency romance. Coders develop languages that are programmed with images, recipes, and Shakespearean-style plays. This panel will consider the fundamental questions about computing and language that these projects are raising, explore exactly how these provocations operate, and look at how new projects relate to each other.

  3. Is New York Still the Most Influential Food City? - SXSW Interactive/Film 2016

Over the last ten years, food has become a national obsession. Across the US, more restaurants are opening, and in the most unexpected of places. Last year, 82 New York City restaurants closed, according to the state’s restaurant association. With such high competition, you have to wonder if the gamble is worth it. Many chefs are eager to trade in NYC buzz and for a restaurant of their own in a city where competition is lower and appreciation is higher. With so many chefs leaving NYC, we have to wonder: Is NYC still the epicenter of it all and how is recognition and buzz shifting? From NYC restaurateur powerhouses, to mom and pop shop owners, we will discuss the restaurant landscape.

  4. Will ‘No-Tipping’ Save the Restaurant Industry? - SXSW Interactive/Film 2016

This past November, Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality group turned dining out on it’s head by introducing a zero-gratuity policy. This game changer not only affects the BOH, FOH, and diners experience/paycheck, but it is having a ripple effect across the restaurant industry as a whole. Adam Rapoport, EIC of Bon Appétit, sits down with Meyer to discuss the praise and backlash of a no-tipping world and the policies that are yet to come.

This session is part of convergence programming and is accessible to multiple badges beyond Interactive, Gold and Platinum.

  5. Hooked on Bycatch: Seafood You Should Be Eating - SXSW Interactive/Film 2016

Wherever there is fishing, there is bycatch—the incidental capture of non-target species, and some chefs/fishmongers are working hard to promote the "trash fish" on menus, both for the good of our planet and our taste buds. Yet while most educated diners want to order "sustainable seafood," if faced with choosing between a responsibly harvested salmon and a fish they’ve never heard of (can I interest you in a beautiful Ribbonfish this evening?), diners often rely on what they know and love. Who is successfully making bycatch a part of their everyday menu? What are they serving (and why), and how can we promote this movement nationwide? This is the next generation of nose-to-tail cooking.

  7. Anthony Bourdain as Interviewed by Nathan Thornburgh - SXSW Interactive/Film 2016

Digital has overtaken print throughout the media, and it’s no different in the realms of food and travel. But can travel websites move beyond top ten lists and gauzy food porn? Can you build an audience while talking about the world as it really exists, with all its heartache and idiocy and occasional triumphs? Anthony Bourdain—writer, raconteur, host of CNN’s Part Unknown—became a partner in Roads & Kingdoms, a digital media startup based in Brooklyn and Barcelona, in 2015 to help shape what comes next. He talks food, fear and the future of travel media with Roads & Kingdoms co-founder Nathan Thornburgh.

  10. Next for NASA: The Journey to Mars - SXSW Interactive 2016

NASA’s Journey to Mars is underway. Already, the first steps are being taken – rovers and orbiters are studying the habitability of the Red Planet, astronauts aboard the International Space Station are studying the effects of long-duration stays in space, and the new Orion crew vehicle successfully has completed a test flight 15 times higher than the space station’s orbit. Now, Kennedy Space Center in Florida is transforming into a next-generation spaceport, the world’s most powerful rocket – Space Launch System – is undergoing manufacture and testing, and other advanced new systems are in development. Beginning very soon, increasingly ambitious missions will lead to the first steps on Mars.
