  1. FutureEverything 2015: Warren Ellis - Some Bleak Circus

Closing the 2015 FutureEverything conference, we welcome esteemed writer and sociocultural commentator Warren Ellis. ‘Some Bleak Circus’ is a light entertainment about psychedelic nightmares, the grim tide of time, our weird present moment and our future doom. Gathering up the four themes of the festival and ruining them. Because you have had fun at FutureEverything, and now it is time for the fun to stop.

As a writer concerned with exploring the unknown, Warren Ellis has written and been invited to speak on subjects such as inventing the future, our possible transhumanist landscape, and where the cultural history of ritual applies to our current understandings of technology. Warren Ellis is the award-winning writer of graphic novels like Transmetropolitan, Fell, Ministry of Space and Planetary, and the author of the NYT-bestselling Gun Machine and the “underground classic” novel Crooked Little Vein. He’s also written extensively for Vice, WIRED UK and Reuters on technological and cultural matters. His newest publication is the digital short-story single Dead Pig Collector, from FSG Originals. His next book will be the novella Normal, also from FSG. A documentary about his work, Captured Ghosts, was released in 2012.

  2. Haunted Machines: Warren Ellis

Writer Warren Ellis explores the point in history at which science and magic split, and where this relationship remains in the devices we evoke from the ether. Where have the narratives of magic been realised and replicated in our contemporary incarnations of technology, and where have our strive for innovation created the condition for witchcraft. A mini-conference inside FutureEverything 2015, hosted and guest curated by artist and designer Tobias Revell, and FutureEverything’s Natalie Kane, Haunted Machines reflected on the narratives of magic and hauntings pervading our relationship with technology and began to analyse why these narratives exist, what they mean and what they do.
