    A suspended FBI agent, suspended FBI staff operations specialist, and a former agent testified on the alleged abuse of power complaints they filed against the agency before the Select Weaponization of the Federal Government Subcommittee. Garrett O’Boyle, Steve Friend, and Marcus Allen gave testimony on why they filed the complaints and how they’ve been wronged by the FBI. Investigations into their allegations and their suspensions are ongoing. Throughout the hearing, lawmakers engaged in debates over the hearing’s intent and playing politics.

  3. Hearing on Twitter Documents About Content Moderation Decisions

    The House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government held a hearing to examine internal Twitter documents concerning content moderation decisions made by the social media company. These documents were often referred to as the “Twitter Files,” and were made public in December 2022. Journalist Matt Taibbi and author Michael Shellenberger were among those given access to the documents. Both testified for more than two hours on what these documents contained, with a focus on alleged First Amendment rights suppression by Twitter. Lawmakers from both parties throughout the hearing engaged in tense exchanges over the content of these documents.

  4. Biden v. Nebraska Oral Argument

    The Supreme Court heard oral argument in <i>Biden v. Nebraska</i>, a case involving six states challenging the legality of President Biden’s student loan debt relief program that was approved and adopted in August 2022 by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. The administration argued the secretary had legal authority to enact the program under the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act (HEROES), which gives the education secretary authority to “waive or modify” federal student loan programs to ensure borrowers experiencing economic burdens from a national emergency declaration (in this case the COVID-19 pandemic) are not financially worse off due to their loans. Nebraska and five other states argued that the program is not lawful. At the federal district court level this case was dismissed for lack of standing. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, however, ruled for the states and issued a nationwide injunction, stopping the program from moving forward.

    The Supreme Court heard oral argument in <i>Department of Education v. Brown</i>, involving two student loan borrowers who did not qualify for maximum forgiveness for President Biden’s student loan debt relief program that Education Secretary Miguel Cardona adopted in August 2022.
