Three SCU members presented research papers at the recent AIAA Conference, a prestigious 33,000 member organization that is for the first time recognizing UAP as a valid topic of research . This is an important recognition of the quality of research that the SCU is conducting. There will be 3 short 10min videos of our presentations followed by an Q&A discussion of our research topics.
Title: FAA Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Sighting Reports: A Preliminary Survey
Abstract: A preliminary analysis of US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) sighting reports was performed by inspection and review of a subset of the 11,229 reports issued by the FAA between 2014 and March 2021. The purpose of this study was to enhance basic knowledge concerning the nature and presence of drones in U.S. airspace, explore the possibility that UAP are recorded in the FAA data, and contribute towards enhanced aircraft safety. Reports were manually reviewed for altitudes, descriptions, shapes, sizes, event time of day, and other characteristics. This study finds that unexpectedly large numbers of drones are being encountered by pilots at surprisingly high altitudes across the US, well above the official FAA drone altitude limit of 122m (400 ft).
