  6. Suspiria: Cinefantastique Podcast 1:36 | Cinefantastique Online

It’s a ’70s flashback weekend on the Cinefantastique Horror, Fantasy & Science Fiction Podcast, as Dan Persons, Lawrence French, and Steve Biodrowski gaze in wonder at the Technicolor extravagance of SUSPIRIA (1977), Dario Argento’s pulse-pounding cult classic of supernatural horror, starring Jessica Harper, Joan Bennett, and Alida Valli. How does Argento’s extremely stylized vision of violence and terror hold up decades later, and which version should you watch: the American cut available on Netflix Instant View or the original, unexpurgated version on DVD? These answers and other secrets lie behind door with three irises – just turn the blue one…

  7. Marketing the Semantic Web

On Friday, February 11, a group of Semantic thought leaders from around the globe met with their host and colleague, Paul Miller, for the third installment of the Semantic Link, a monthly podcast covering the world of Semantic Technologies.

This month, we tackle the topic of “Marketing the Semantic Web”.

During the show, regulars Christine Connors, Eric Franzon, Ivan Herman, Eric Hoffer, Bernadette Hyland and Andraz Tori are joined by two special guests with some experience in both marketing and semantic technologies.

Krista Thomas was responsible for marketing at Thomson Reuters‘ semantic technology success story, Open Calais, and is now VP Marketing at Los Angeles startup Ad.ly.

Scott Brinker is President & CTO at ion interactive, and writes the ChiefMarTec blog.

During the conversation, regulars and guests discuss the way in which ‘semantic technology’ solutions are being successfully marketed to potential beneficiaries.

Have a listen, and learn that pitches to non-semantic technology enthusiasts beginning “We’ll convert all your data to RDF, leverage the Semantic Web, and construct an OWL-based ontology” are probably doomed to failure

  8. Podcast: Finding and Creating Relevant Content — Strategies for Social Media | I'd Rather Be Writing

In the barrage of information created by all the social media channels, how can you find relevant content? How can you move past forms of noise to actually produce content that engages users? What forms of social media do students respond to the most? These are some of the questions we explored in a presentation I gave to Brigham Young University Provo students earlier this week. This podcast is a recording of the presentation.

The podcast is about an hour long, and I bookended the presentation with some thoughts before and after.

  9. Visual Composing: Document Design for Print and Digital Media, with Jo Mackiewicz | I'd Rather Be Writing

Recently Jo Mackiewicz (Auburn University) and Kathryn Riley (Illinois Institute of Technology) published Visual Composing: Document Design for Print and Digital Media with Pearson. This book covers the visual side of document design, including all the design decisions from the font you use to the colors you choose to the tables, column widths, images types, and more. I interviewed Jo for a podcast about the book. In the podcast, we cover the following:

Typography, including serif and san-serif fonts Font sizes, and recommendations for older users Characters per line — 35, 55, 75, or 95 characters long Color — complementary colors, Itten’s wheel, the psychology of color Headings and subheadings Background colors, negative and positive polarity Contrast in document design Dual-coding theory, and when aural and verbal conflict but not visual and verbal Reasons for gaps in graphic document design among technical writers File types for images Alignment — full justification versus ragged right Symmetry and professional versus playful tone

  10. Podcast: A Practical Guide to Information Architecture, with Donna Spencer | I'd Rather Be Writing

Donna Spencer is the author of A Practical Guide to Information Architecture as well as two other books (on card sorting and writing for the web). She’s an experienced information architect, based in Australia, who gives regular workshops on information architecture at conferences such as the IA Summit and also runs the UX Australia conference. In this podcast we talk about information architecture, especially in the context of technical communication. Some of the topics we cover include the following:

What information architecture is, especially in contrast to content strategy and user experience Why writers are well suited for information architecture Reasons for doing user research prior to building your information architecture Determining user terminology (and dangers of choosing the wrong terms, even if people use them) Evaluating browse versus search, and the problem of looking for information without knowing the right terms Strategies for dealing with overlapping categories and difficult-to-fit topics Why organizing content by audience can be tricky Using focused entry points to serve different audiences Finding what you need when you don’t know what you need Organizing content by popularity, and other alternative classification schemes Scenario driven testing with index cards Card sorting strategies, tools, and limits Reasons for brainstorming IA off-screen, without your computer. Determining the number of top-level navigation options Providing navigation through next and related links Beginning the information architecture at the content page rather than the home page The kind of content to add to your home page I highly recommend this book as well as learning more about information architecture in general. For more information about Donna Spencer, see her site, Maad Mob. For more information on her book, see A Practical Guide to Information Architecture. You can follow Donna on Twitter @maadonna.
