  1. Solar lanterns replace kerosene killers in Africa - The Science Show - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    Kerosene lanterns are used for lighting across Africa. They result in poor health outcomes and loss of life due to accidents. An alternative is the cheap, highly efficient solar lantern. They provide better light, and remove the poor health outcomes of kerosene lamps. Jeremy Leggett describes a new model for aid where crowdfunding allows capital to be sourced to fund manufacture and distribution of lamps to poor people in Africa. Following early success, there is an ambitious plan to see the end of kerosene lamps by 2020.

  2. Feed-in tariffs for renewable electricity - Hans-Josef Fell, MP

    Hans-Josef Fell is a Member of the German Federal Parliament and Energy Policy Speaker for the German Greens. He wrote the draft Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) which was adopted in 2000 in the face of a strong political opposition.

    The adoption of the EEG led directly to the phenomenally successful German feed-in tariff policy. The EEG is the foundation for the technological developments in photovoltaics, biogas, wind power and geothermal energy in Germany, which are admired throughout the world.

    The underlying principle of the EEG has now been copied in dozens of countries, as well as most Australian states and territories.

    The building sector is seen as being able to offer great reductions in energy use and so reductions in carbon emissions. So there is an advantage in placing major power hungry computing facilities where the power used would otherwise go to waste. These server farms could be positioned in places with abundant renewable power such as wind, where transporting the power would be wasteful, but transporting the data in and out might be feasible.
