Jon Ronson looks at one of our deepest fears.

When Vicky Coren realised her fear of flying was stopping her travelling, she sought help from a specialist councillor. He cured her - only to die a year later in an air crash. Mike Thexton tells Jon of his ordeal on board a hijacked plane, waiting for 12 hours to be shot. Comedian Danny Robins is terrified of death - so terrified that Jon decides to send him to a near death experience festival in Spain to try to cure his phobia. 3. Brick By Brick

Exploring the demolitions industry through the dismantling, brick by brick, of one of the largest granite-faced buildings in the world, Marischal College in Aberdeen.

The college boasts the second largest granite facade in the world; formerly part of the University of Aberdeen, it is undergoing radical change to house the city’s new council offices. In order to save the historic frontage, the building is being dismantled piece by piece, leaving only the outer walls. Skilled demolitions workers, stonemasons and archaeologists take apart the fabric of the building, revealing unknown aspects of the its structure and history, and offering insights into the demolitions world.

  4. Speechification: A Cymbal Tale

This one, as you might have guessed, is about cymbals - a history and exploration taking us from before the Bible to after Spandau Ballet, including the 32nd oldest company in the world. Excellent, funny, informative - full of facts you’ll want to repeat to people in the pub."

  7. The American Life: My Big Break

How does Ira Glass keep finding these amazing stories? I particularly loved ‘Act One’ told by Sixties comedy duo (and married couple) Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall: the act that had the bad luck to appear on the same Ed Sullivan show as the Beatles.
