  1. RSA - The RSA President’s Lecture: Why Creativity is the New Economy

The RSA President’s Lecture: Why Creativity is the New Economy, (10th Sep 2012)

We are living in a time of "Great Reset" - when economic crisis provides an opportunity to rethink virtually every aspect of our lives - from how and where we live, to how we work, to how we invest in individuals and infrastructure, to how we shape our cities and regions.

Taking a deeper look at the forces reshaping our economy, and giving us a provocative new way to think about why we live as we do - and where we might be headed, Richard Florida shows how these forces, when combined, will spur a fresh era of growth and prosperity, define a new geography of progress, and create surprising opportunities for all of us.

Using lessons from the last ten years to show how Creative Class theory has grown from a prediction to a prescription for an economy in turmoil, Florida argues the need for a new social compact to put us back on the path to economic growth. Florida’s Creative Compact commits to developing the full human potential and creative capabilities of every person, and suggests a new set of institutional supports to ensure a more robust and sustainable social system around the new world of work.

Speaker: Dr Richard Florida, director, the Martin Prosperity Institute and Professor of Business and Creativity at the University of Toronto and NYU; senior editor, The Atlantic and is the author of several influential global best sellers, including the award-winning ‘The Rise of the Creative Class’.

Introduced by: HRH The Princess Royal, RSA President.

    Chair: Luke Johnson, RSA Chair.

  2. RSA - The Fate of Reason in an Age of Belief

The Fate of Reason in an Age of Belief - RSA Thursday, (8th Nov 2012)

In his new book ‘50 Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World’, Emmy-award-wining film-maker and author Stephen Trombley offers a concise history of modern thought from the Enlightenment to the present day. Profiling the landmark philosophers, scientists, political and social theorists as well as spiritual leaders whose ideas have defined the age we live in, Trombley offers a fresh analysis of their key ideas, and re-evaluation of their importance as we proceed into the 21st century.

In a special event at the RSA, Stephen Trombley offers a stout defence of rationality in what he sees as an era of rising irrational belief; and argues for the continued utility of the work of the four “shapers-in-chief” of our modern world: Marx, Darwin, Einstein and Freud.

Speaker: Stephen Trombley, writer, film-maker and author of ‘50 Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World’.

Chair: Jules Evans, philosopher, writer and policy director at the Centre for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London. www.philosophyforlife.org

  3. RSA - The Silence of Animals: On progress and other modern myths

The Silence of Animals: On progress and other modern myths - RSA Keynote (4th Mar 2013)

Are we all just ‘deluded animals’?

John Gray, one of Britain’s most provocative philosophers, visits the RSA to discuss the ideas raised in ‘The Silence of Animals’ - the much-anticipated sequel to ‘Straw Dogs’.

Gray will discuss the religious origins of modern ideas of progress in civilisation and suggest that the prevailing belief in gradual improvement is a myth. Examining the lives of people who abandoned or never subscribed to it, he will ask what might replace the ruling myth.

Along the way he will consider Naples in 1944 and flying saucers…

Speaker: John Gray, political philosopher and author.

Chair: Jonathan Derbyshire, culture editor, New Statesman

  4. RSA - The Inequality Crisis

The Inequality Crisis - RSA Comment - (21st Feb 2013)

Read Stewart Lansley article, The Inequality Crisis (http://comment.rsablogs.org.uk/2013/02/19/inequality-crisis/)

For the last 30 years, the economy of the UK (and much of the rich world ) has been managed on the basis of a doctrine that holds that inequality is a necessary condition for economic progress. Author and economist Stewart Lansley visits the RSA to argue that this theory is wrong. Rather, the surging income gap of recent decades has not just been socially corrosive, it lies at the roots of the current prolonged national and global crisis.

Allowing the fruits of growth to be colonised by the few has, contrary to the current orthodoxy, simply brought more turbulent and more fragile economies. We now need to abandon this theory and adopt a new approach to economic management built around the growing evidence that more equal societies are the route, not just to social harmony, but also to economic health.

Speaker: Stewart Lansley is a visiting fellow at Bristol University and the author of ‘The Cost of Inequality’, runner-up in Spear’s 2012 business book of the year awards

  5. RSA - The Surprising Truth About Moving Others

The Surprising Truth About Moving Others - RSA Keynote (26th Feb 2013)

Whether we’re entrepreneurs persuading funders, employees pitching colleagues, politicians pushing policies, parents and teachers cajoling kids, social networkers trying to grow our Twitter following; we all spend our days trying to move others. Today, like it or not, we’re all in sales. Each and every one of us spends time trying to persuade others to part with resources - money, time, attention - though most of the time we don’t realise we’re doing it.

The ability to move others - to exchange what they have for what we have - is fundamentally human, and crucial to our survival and our happiness.

Bestselling author of Drive and star of the most-viewed RSA Animate, Dan Pink explores the ways in which we can all improve our everyday sales skills, and identifies the personal qualities and essential skills necessary to move people.

    Speaker: Dan Pink, author.

Chair: Adam Lent, director of Fellowship and projects, RSA.

  6. RSA - Find a Voice Not Read a Script: Looking for the Heart of English

RSA Debate 23rd Jan 2013; 18:00 (full recording including audience Q&A)

What are the priorities for a new English curriculum? Should it enable our children and young people to be creative and communicate effectively in a global context, or is the most important thing to read and write accurately? Looking for the Heart of English involved 400 teachers discussing what really matters in learning English. The government has made proposals which do not meet the high expectations of these teachers and many others. The launch of Meeting High Expectations: will the new primary curriculum be good enough for our children? will bring out the vital learning which will enable young people to find their voices.

This event is part of the continuing conversation about English teaching and what learners really need. The high profile discussion will contribute to the consultation on the government proposals for a new curriculum.

The discussion will include those who contributed to the publication, including Michael Boyd, former artistic director, RSC; Chris Meade, co-director, If:book; Roger Billing, headteacher, Abbots Langley Primary School; and Jenny Lubuska, head of English, Hayes School.

Chair: Sue Horner, leader in education and the arts and chair, RSA Academies Board.

  7. RSA - The Scientific Method Of The Mind: What Sherlock Holmes can teach us about decision making

RSA Thursday 24th Jan 2013; 13:00 (full recording including audience Q&A)

When we think of the scientific method, we imagine an experimenter in his laboratory following a series of steps that runs something like this: make some observations about a phenomenon; create a hypothesis to explain those observations; design an experiment to test the hypothesis; run the experiment; see if the results match your expectations; rework your hypothesis if you must; lather, rinse, and repeat. Simple seeming enough.

But how can we go beyond that? Can we train our minds to work like that automatically, all the time, through a mindful, present approach to our everyday thinking and decision making?

Sherlock Holmes teaches us to do not only that, but to go a step beyond: by using his methodology and applying the mindfulness that has come to characterise the scientific method to our lives, we can learn to optimise not only our own everyday existence but our broader contributions to society and the lives of those around us.

Speaker: Maria Konnikova, author and columnist

Chair: Vikki Heywood CBE, RSA Chair

  8. RSA - Tomorrow’s Work. Why Yesterday’s Expectations Are Ruining Today’s Future

RSA Keynote 7th Feb 2013; 18:00 (full recording including audience Q&A)

Technologist and writer Ben Hammersley explores the role of the internet and digital technologies in today’s workplace.

As social media, mobile devices, constant communication, online sharing, and open collaboration become the norms in the rest of our lives, the traditional workplace is failing to adapt.

How do our traditional workplace models conflict with our new internet-driven expectations of how we might live and work to our full potential, and how might companies and organisations learn to adapt in the 21st century?

Speaker: Ben Hammersley, Prime Minister’s Ambassador to TechCity, contributing editor, Wired UK, innovator in residence, Goldsmiths, University of London and author of ‘64 Things You Need to Know Now for Then’.

Chair: Matthew Taylor, chief executive, RSA.

  9. RSA - 21st Century Inc.: Making the corporation work for us

RSA Thursday 14th Feb 2013; 13:00 (full recording including audience Q&A)

While corporations are the source of our prosperity, they are also the cause of many of our most-pressing global problems. How is the corporation failing us, and what steps should we take to restore trust in it? How can we enter into a new way of thinking about the firm, which not only stops it destroying us but turns it into the means of protecting our environment, addressing social problems, and creating new sources of entrepreneurship and innovation?

Colin Mayer, Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the University of Oxford, visits the RSA to expose the sources of these problems – ownership, governance, accountability, transparency and the erosion of citizens’ trust in big business.

The current pre-occupation with shareholder value has been very damaging to the performance of firms, but also to their customers and the communities they should serve. He sets out an ambitious agenda for change and will be challenging corporations, regulators, governments, shareholders and consumers to engage meaningfully with the issues and to commit to transformation.

Speaker: Colin Mayers, Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies, the University of Oxford.

Chair: Matthew Taylor, chief exeutive, RSA.

  10. RSA - How to Face the Digital Future Without Fear

It is impossible to separate the digital world from the one that we now live in. The internet affects every aspect of our lives – our society, our culture, our economy and our politics - and we all need to know how it works, what it can do, and what it will do in the future.

Editor-at-Large for ‘Wired’ magazine, David Cameron’s ambassador to Tech City and guru of the digital age Ben Hammersley visits the RSA to demystify the internet, decode cyberspace, and guide us through the innovations of the incredible revolution we are all living through.

Explaining the effects of the changes in the modern world, and the latest ideas in technology, culture, business and politics, Ben Hammersley will reveal this decade’s big social and technological trends, and how they intersect.
