    In his new book ‘50 Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World’, Emmy-award-wining film-maker and author Stephen Trombley offers a concise history of modern thought from the Enlightenment to the present day. Profiling the landmark philosophers, scientists, political and social theorists as well as spiritual leaders whose ideas have defined the age we live in, Trombley offers a fresh analysis of their key ideas, and re-evaluation of their importance as we proceed into the 21st century.

    In a special event at the RSA, Stephen Trombley offers a stout defence of rationality in what he sees as an era of rising irrational belief; and argues for the continued utility of the work of the four “shapers-in-chief” of our modern world: Marx, Darwin, Einstein and Freud.

    Are we all just ‘deluded animals’?

    John Gray, one of Britain’s most provocative philosophers, visits the RSA to discuss the ideas raised in ‘The Silence of Animals’ - the much-anticipated sequel to ‘Straw Dogs’.

    Gray will discuss the religious origins of modern ideas of progress in civilisation and suggest that the prevailing belief in gradual improvement is a myth. Examining the lives of people who abandoned or never subscribed to it, he will ask what might replace the ruling myth.

    Along the way he will consider Naples in 1944 and flying saucers…

    For the last 30 years, the economy of the UK (and much of the rich world ) has been managed on the basis of a doctrine that holds that inequality is a necessary condition for economic progress. Author and economist Stewart Lansley visits the RSA to argue that this theory is wrong. Rather, the surging income gap of recent decades has not just been socially corrosive, it lies at the roots of the current prolonged national and global crisis.

    Allowing the fruits of growth to be colonised by the few has, contrary to the current orthodoxy, simply brought more turbulent and more fragile economies. We now need to abandon this theory and adopt a new approach to economic management built around the growing evidence that more equal societies are the route, not just to social harmony, but also to economic health.

    Speaker: Stewart Lansley is a visiting fellow at Bristol University and the author of ‘The Cost of Inequality’, runner-up in Spear’s 2012 business book of the year awards

  6. RSA - Find a Voice Not Read a Script: Looking for the Heart of English

    What are the priorities for a new English curriculum? Should it enable our children and young people to be creative and communicate effectively in a global context, or is the most important thing to read and write accurately? Looking for the Heart of English involved 400 teachers discussing what really matters in learning English. The government has made proposals which do not meet the high expectations of these teachers and many others. The launch of Meeting High Expectations: will the new primary curriculum be good enough for our children? will bring out the vital learning which will enable young people to find their voices.

    This event is part of the continuing conversation about English teaching and what learners really need. The high profile discussion will contribute to the consultation on the government proposals for a new curriculum.

    The discussion will include those who contributed to the publication, including Michael Boyd, former artistic director, RSC; Chris Meade, co-director, If:book; Roger Billing, headteacher, Abbots Langley Primary School; and Jenny Lubuska, head of English, Hayes School.

  7. RSA - The Scientific Method Of The Mind: What Sherlock Holmes can teach us about decision making

    When we think of the scientific method, we imagine an experimenter in his laboratory following a series of steps that runs something like this: make some observations about a phenomenon; create a hypothesis to explain those observations; design an experiment to test the hypothesis; run the experiment; see if the results match your expectations; rework your hypothesis if you must; lather, rinse, and repeat. Simple seeming enough.

    But how can we go beyond that? Can we train our minds to work like that automatically, all the time, through a mindful, present approach to our everyday thinking and decision making?

    Sherlock Holmes teaches us to do not only that, but to go a step beyond: by using his methodology and applying the mindfulness that has come to characterise the scientific method to our lives, we can learn to optimise not only our own everyday existence but our broader contributions to society and the lives of those around us.
