  7. London Symphony Orchestra: Maurice Murphy

The LSO’s Principal Trumpet for 30 years, Maurice Murphy, retired from the orchestra in June 2007 – truly the end of an era. Maurice is one of the best known, most admired and loved trumpeters in the world. In this exclusive programme, Tommy Pearson takes an affectionate journey through Maurice’s career, talks to many of his colleagues and friends and hears some of his greatest moments as a player.

Composer John Williams talks about the first Star Wars sessions – Maurice’s first notes as principal in the LSO – and how he subsequently wrote with Maurice in mind for Superman, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter; Michael Tilson Thomas recalls the power of a Maurice Mahler 5; Co-Principal Rod Franks talks about his 43 year friendship with Maurice; many other colleagues, including Gerry Ruddock, Nigel Gomm, Patrick Harrild and Gerald Newson contribute their own memories; and we also hear from Maurice’s family – his son Martin and wife Shirley.

But at the centre of the programme is an interview with Maurice himself, as he looks back on an extraordinary career from boy wonder in brass bands, losing out to a Pearly King in Opportunity Knocks, becoming principal cornet in Black Dyke, moving into classical music with the BBC Northern, and landing the LSO job. We also hear speeches and tributes recorded at Maurice’s LSO retirement party in June.

It is the portrait of a legend; but one who remains modest and humble. “I’m just another trumpeter who’s been very lucky” he says. No-one believes that for a moment.

  8. David Toub: this piece intentionally left blank (2006)

“This came about as an improvisation, and is virtually unchanged other than a few minor tweaks. It was composed using an Ensoniq KS-32 synthesizer providing input into Reason 3.0.4. The score is a pretty close approximation of what was improvised, but is not 100% accurate. It can be performed by any keyboard, although it could also be performed for any group of instruments. I felt the bass line would be very interesting if played by a bass guitar, for example. This work is dedicated to my friend Kel Smith. It was premiered on May 9th, 2007 by the Diverse Instrument Ensemble under Lloyd Rogers at Cal State Fullerton in an arrangement by Paul Bailey for oboe, alto sax, french horn, trombone, bass guitar and two vibraphones.”

  10. Textile Orchestra

The new disc For the Boss (Beta-Lactam Ring Records) from the Textile Orchestra is almost a musical equivalent of Katamari: the ball starts rolling, picking up chunks of random textures, sounds, stumbling around an arena of collected percussion, mangled musique concrète, turntables, squawks, David Attenborough blurts, who knows what else, and finally turns into a complete shitstorm monster of thinly-spliced chaos hitting the windshield like a million metallic bugs. This lengthy MP3 was recorded in Paris in 2004 and features Alexandre Bellenger (turntables), Arnaud Rivière (mixing board/electrophone), Dan Warburton (violin) and Aaron Moore (turntables). Moore is also of legendary soundshapers Volcano the Bear, and appears as a guest on Daniel Blumin’s WFMU program this Sunday night at midnight. Thanks to Aaron and Chris from BLR.
