  1. Flogging A Dead Genre? Resuscitating New Age — Douglas Mcgowan

New Age, the musical genre, is generally dismissed as tacky, dull, and even dangerously stupid. Fair enough, but according to a small coterie of serious record collectors and underground musicians, it’s also extremely misunderstood and increasingly crucial in a world gone mad. I’ll discuss my personal discovery of New Age’s virtues and my encounters with its leading figures, and present a revisionist account of the genre’s rarely-considered connections to the larger musical continuum. Topics include New Age’s countercultural, DIY roots — self-publishing, alternative distribution, the role of the cassette format, and the issues of semantics and framing in understanding the genre. I’ll address New Age’s digital, mass-market downfall and its recent renaissance, and my own attempts as a label owner to get people to take another listen. I’ll present music, cover art, and other ephemera that clearly communicate the recent excitement surrounding this discredited genre.

  2. Mondo Diablo Episode 282: Let Us Play at Exorcism!

This week, our old friend Bob Larson (whose under investigation-what conservative radio personality isn’t) tries to pull off some amazingly New Age therapy on some gay men. It includes the assumption that they hate their fathers, and when that doesn’t pan out, they hate their mothers. I suppose if this guy had hated his father, he would have pulled out some old men out of the audience to help with his routine, and it would have been a big male affection festival. Which is really gay.

  4. What’s up with the Rosicrucians?

    From http://skeptoid.com/

Who the heck are the Rosicrucians, and what’s up with all the historical imagery? They sure do claim a lot of ties to ancient mysticism, especially for an organization less than a century old. Are the Rosicrucians really descended from an ancient order of alchemists, or are they just another mail order company selling recycled New Age goobbledygook?
