Kevin Bazzana came across this recording of Glenn Gould performing Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with the Victoria Symphony and conductor Hans Gruber in 1955 at the Glenn Gould Archives in Ottawa, part of the Library and Archives Canada.
He made a CD copy of the acetate disc, the only known recording of Gould with the Victoria Symphony. It has never been released.
Bazzana said the recording was likely made for Gould’s personal use or as a gift to him. He liked to keep recordings of his concerts and sometimes hired companies to make them.
He performed two nights in Victoria, Dec. 4 and 5 in 1955. It’s not clear which night this recording was made.
The quality is less than perfect but the cadenza is clear and the recording complete.
