Wo die moderne Meteorologie schon Tage im Voraus warnen kann, muss die Seismologie froh sein, wenn sie ein oder zwei Sekunden vorher weiß, dass große Beben kommt. Alle Versuche, zuverlässige Frühwarnsysteme zu entwickeln, sind bisher gescheitert. Was bleibt sind Aussagen nach dem Motto, die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Bebens habe sich von zehn hoch minus zwanzig auf zehn hoch minus achtzehn erhöht. Sicher keine Basis für Massen-Evakuierungen. Das erklärt den Schock, den das Urteil eines italienischen Gerichts zum Erdbeben von L’Aquila in der Scientific Community auslöste. Sieben Seismologen wurden in erster Instanz wegen fahrlässiger Tötung zu langjährigen Haftstrafen verurteilt, weil sie nach Ansicht der Staatsanwaltschaft nicht rechtzeitig vor dem Beben gewarnt hatten.
