"This is the actual sound (several recordings spliced together in fact) of the Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument descending through the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan in 2005. At the time I remember thinking “why isn’t this on the news?” As far as I could tell it was the first natural sound ever recorded in space (I’m not counting all the recordings of astronauts chatting and dropping spanners etc.), sound propagating in the atmosphere of another world. It’s the sound of Titan’s dense – mostly nitrogen – atmosphere rushing past the probe’s external microphones (fitted for that exact purpose)."

America-inspired graphic designer, compulsive truth-teller and typography stickler Aaron Draplin (@draplin) joins us to talk the real America. And when we say "the real America," we don’t just talk politics - although there’s a lot of that. We’re talking aesthetics. Stories and legends. Abandoned cities. Things we’ve forgotten. Vivid colours. Real typefaces that leap into your face and are visible from miles away. What a logo should look and feel like.
Aaron even gives us a survey of his favourite state signs.
We wrap with some really good talk about Field Notes, Draplin’s own little way of encouraging you to wrap those typing fingers back around a pen. GO GET SOME.
It’s a wild ride, dames and gents. A wild, Technicolor ride into the past, and your future, and the past again.

"Here’s an audio file of my talk at Dharma Field in Minneapolis last Sunday, December 6, 2009.
12/6/09 Dharma Field
Those of you who’ve heard my talks before will recognize that the first 15 minutes are a variation on my standard introductory stump speech. This is the autobiographical how-I-got-into-Zen thing I do a lot. But after 15 minutes, the Q&A started and it went in some interesting directions, I think."
