The correspondence between John and Abigal Adams is astonishing for its length and historical value. They wrote to each other constantly during their long periods of separation and one can see an almost daily tide of events from their courtship in 1762 to the Presidency. Here I attempt to do an occasional read from the historical archive with the assistance of Julie Bellam.
How did the notion of common sense become tied up with political populism and our modern form of democracy. We need to go back to post revolutionary Europe and America to find the answer.

England is paranoid that the colonies will become independent. After the French and Indian war more troops are sent to occupy old forts. They tell the Americans that the new troops are to protect against Indians, but they are actually there for intimidation. The new an improved policing army manages to stir up a war with the local Indians. It all seems expensive, but not to worry parliament levies a tax on the colonies to pay for the escapade.
