  1. Have your Meat and Eat it Too

The third in a three-part series from CBC radio’s Ideas on the place eating meat has in our society, and the most interesting of the three. You don’t need to have listened to the first two. If you don’t know who Joel Salatin is, I highly recommend giving this a listen. If you do, you’ll probably want to anyway.

  4. SXSW 09 - Designing For Irrational Behavior

The core of sustainability efforts is behavior change, understanding patterns of behavior and developing models for motivating sustainable behavior change. This approach assumes a rational response from the consumer. However, most decisions are irrational. This panel will examine how to motivate people to make sustainable changes by appealing to their emotions instead. This panel is sponsored by frog design.

  5. Sizing Up Sustainable Food

These days some shoppers are looking at more than the price of their groceries; they’re also considering "food miles" — how far the grapes or pork chops traveled to get to the store. But some experts say eating food grown locally isn’t necessarily the best way to go green at the grocery store.

  6. RadioLab podcast: The Bus Stop

There’s a common problem with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients all over the world. They get disoriented. They wander off. Lost in their memories, they amble the world. But sometimes, in their wandering, they can end up too far from home, frightened, or hurt. So what are you supposed to do if your loved one–a parent, a grandparent–begins to wander in this way? Often times the only solution is to lock them up. Which just feels cruel. But what else are you supposed to do if you want to keep them safe?

Well, a nursing home in Düsseldorf, Germany, called the Benrath Senior Center, came up with a new idea. An idea so simple you almost think it couldn’t work. This week on the podcast producer Lulu Miller talks to Richard Neureither and Regine Hauch about what they’ve done in Düsseldorf.

  9. WNYC - Radiolab - Animal Minds

When we gaze into the eyes of our beloved pets, can we ever really know what they’re thinking? Is it naive to assume they might be experiencing something close to the emotions we feel? Or, on the contrary, is it ridiculous to assume that they AREN’T feeling anything back? In this hour of Radiolab, we explore what science can say about what goes on in the minds of animals.

  10. Tim O’Reilly: The War for the Web

The early days of the internet were truly astonishing. As people came to comprehend the power of networked information, they seized the many opportunities for innovation created by the open architecture of the web. Of course, the browser wars also showed that threats to openness and interoperability were a real danger. Today, Tim O’Reilly worries that escalating competition between large companies and closed platforms may drive the web towards a battle ground of locked down services and proprietary data.
