  1. Making the invisible visible: Dan Hill on digital design and strategy | SlowTV | The Monthly

At this State of Design Festival event, Dan Hill discusses how cities worldwide are beginning to transform the urban experiences through smart digital services, to the benefit of all users of the city. He describes a world in which people will increasingly expect the normal urban experience – public transport, wayfinding, council services, urban planning and architecture, cultural activities and so on – to be as interactive as apps on a smart phone. Drawing from his experience with cities and urban developments globally (as a Senior Consultant with Arup), Dan Hill provides a user guide for the coming era of smart cities.

Presented by State of Design at ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne, July 2010

  3. Dan Rubin: The New Language of Web Design at New Adventures In Web Design

Our industry has aged into double digits, but much of the language we use to describe what we do and how things work is borrowed or repurposed, sometimes without issue, but often leading to confusion. Having a distinct set of terminology is an important sign of maturity for a line of work, those words and phrases to lead the next generation of practitioners — and it’s high time we set about creating it.

  8. Conversation with Dan Ariely, author and behaviorial economist

In this episode, Dane Stangler, a research manager at the Kauffman Foundation, talks with Dan Ariely, author and professor. They discussed Ariely’s perspective on behavior economics, which quantifies how people actually act in the marketplace, often very different than what conventional wisdom dictates. Ariely tells how irrational behavior can be both positive and negative. For example, when calorie counts are posted in fast food restaurants, consumers put all logic aside and ignore the numbers. On the plus side, Ariely says, our society benefits from entrepreneurship, even though the risks of starting a business would make it seem an irrational idea.
