  1. Pixels, People, and Play

    Seb is known for large scale installations and events that bring people together using technology, like his interactive digital fireworks, glowstick voting, and PixelPhones - a system that connects all the smart phones together, turning each member of the audience into a single pixel of a huge pulsating display.

    Hardware and software is evolving so fast that creative coders can barely keep up, and we’ve just scratched the surface of what depth sensors, projectors and smart phones are capable of.

    In this down to earth session, Seb will explore how technology can create huge interactive playful events and encourage a sense of community rather than everyone having a private experience with their own screens.

    There’s a good chance that you’ve seen Seb before: he travels the world spreading his infectious enthusiasm for coding and teaching others how to join in the fun. He’s one of those technology-agnostic creators. He used to do a lot of work in Flash. These days he’s more likely to be using JavaScript or Processing or Corona or whatever cutting-edge technology has currently got him all excited.

    Lest you think that Seb dabbles only in the realm of pixels, he has been known to use the physical world as his canvas too, making digital fireworks and projections with Processing.

In this presentation, Samantha will explain how to reinvent your process to leverage Style Tiles as a deliverable.

    Samantha Warren is an experienced designer, speaker, and writer who leverages a diverse background in artistic mediums to create compelling and functional web experiences. Focused on designing for content, she is passionate about using the web as a vehicle to tell compelling stories while creating accessible user-experiences. She has been published in .net Magazine and has presented at various industry events, including Design Day in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin Texas.

    Currently Samantha is the Design Director at Phase2 Technology where she uses her past experience working with brands like National Geographic and Choice Hotels International to help non-profits, publications, and associations tell their stories online.

    In her personal time she talks about design and the web on her blog, BadAssIdeas.com and spends time with her cross-eyed cat, Grace.

  4. Ge Wang: New Expressive Social Mediums on the iPhone

    Due to their mobility, intimacy, and sheer strength in numbers, mobile phones have become much more than simply "miniature computers," increasingly serving as personal and "natural" extensions of ourselves. Therein lies immense potential to reshape the way we think and do, and especially in how we engage one another socially.

    This presentation explores the iPhone as a unique platform for creating new expressive, social mediums. As case studies, we demonstrate and examine how Smule’s "social sonic artifacts" (e.g., Sonic Lighter, and Ocarina) were able to take full advantage of the iPhone’s intersection of technologies (multitouch, powerful mobile CPU and GPU, full audio pipeline, GPS/location, persistent data connection via 3G/Edge) to provide a unique experience that is at once expressive on a personal level, and social on a global scale.

  5. Scott McCloud, author of “Understanding Comics” and “Zot!”: Interview on The Sound of Young America

    Scott McCloud is both an accomplished comics creator and critic. His books of comics criticism, "Understanding Comics," "Reinventing Comics" and "Making Comics" are classics of the form, and are standard-issue in hip literature classes around the country. His newest book is a compilation of his 1980s superhero series Zot!. He talks with us about how to read comics and how he incorporated the influences of the comics of other cultures into his own work in the ’80s.
