GPS Study Shows Drivers Will Slow Down, At A Cost : NPR
U.S. traffic officials who hope to get drivers to slow down may have found something that works: a GPS device that gives drivers a financial incentive not to speed. Some 12,000 Americans die every year in traffic crashes caused by speeding, according to government statistics.

Mapping the Maximum City
With over 14 million people, half of which are squatters or slumdwellers, Mumbai is indeed a "maximum city" according to Schuyler Erle. The obstacles to constructing housing for Mumbai’s huge homeless population pile up long before any plan is drawn: to submit a redevelopment project the area is required to be mapped, and before you can make a map you need reliable data.
Erle describes a daunting challenge to mapping Mumbai: the only data available consisted of many very detailed, but hand-drawn maps, which had been vectorized with no common geographical reference. One of the steps required to go from there to a complete geographical dataset, recounts Erle, involved people covering Mumbai using GPS devices to gather control points.

Chris Anderson: DIY Drones - Making Minimum UAVs
Individuals around the world are building relatively inexpensive aircraft (fixed wing and helicopters) that can fly autonomously. These UAV’s take pictures or videos and transmit them to the ground, follow navigational waypoints for aerial mapping and scientific surveys, and more. In this Where 2.0 session, Anderson shares a personal story of how he and his son started with model planes and added cell phones and robotic kids toys to build amazing UAV’s for less than $1,000.
By automatically taking GPS-tagged pictures, UAVs can populate Google Maps and other GIS services with ultra high resolution (3 cm or better) with timely aerial photography. Anderson demonstrates real excitement for the yet undiscovered applications of these new toys, now cheap enough for enthusiasts around the world to build and share with the help of the DIY Drones community.

RWW Live: The Local & Mobile Web
One of the big trends on the web is more and more location aware / sensitive web applications. Increasingly powerful mobile devices are enabling this. In this episode of RWW Live, we talk about how the Web is evolving to include more location aware applications and what barriers are still in the way - both social & technical barriers.
Joining me from ReadWriteWeb are Marshall Kirkpatrik & Bernard Lunn. Our guests are:
- Dennis Crowley from the previously mentioned Four Square (iTunes link). Check out ReadWriteWeb’s review of Four Square. Before that, Dennis was co-founder of Dodgeball, which was acquired by Google.
