  1. Artworks Feature: The Art of Being Europe Pt.3 - Film and the EU - RN Artworks - 20 March 2011

How many European films would survive Hollywood without EU support? Is the next generation forgetting how to watch European films, growing up instead on a diet of American blockbusters? Wim Wenders is worried.

The King’s Speech wasn’t the only European film to do well at this year’s Oscars. Another film, In a Better World by Danish director Susanne Bier, won best foreign language film. Both were backed by the European Union’s Media program, which is the subject of today’s feature.

This week Lyn Gallacher begins part three of her tour through Europe by taking us to to the movies. It’s a Finnish film.

  2. Ars Technica Podcast Pilot

    Hey gang,

For the past few weeks we’ve been working on a pilot episode of a new Ars Technica podcast, and today we’re finally ready to do a short test release to our readers in the forums. Yes, you heard right. We’ve been making a podcast. We’ll be rotating the cast around with each episode, but this one features myself, Ryan Paul, Ken Fisher, Jacqui Cheng, and Peter Bright. You’ve always wondered if Peter talks (and types) with a British accent — come hear his voice for real!

This pilot is not yet available publicly, we wanted to give the forums a chance to be the debut listeners, you’re both our biggest fans and also our most dedicated critics. Be gentle, it’s our first time! We value your feedback, and we hope you can help us shape the podcast before we go more widely public. Our first episode is dedicated to discussing the singularity, which made for a pretty fun show.

As we keep tweaking things to get this show ready for prime time, we could really use feedback from you, we’re already tired of listening to our own voices. Here’s what we’d love to know:

What do you think of the overall format? Tell us about what you like to hear on podcasts, and how long you prefer episodes to be.

What are your preferences for topics? Our group of editors had a pretty good time recording this, and we wonder if that shows through as you listen to it. Tell us what you think, what worked, what didn’t, and what you’d like to hear more of in the future.

For a while we will feature Ars editors on the shows, but we’d like to know your ideas about special guests to bring on the show. Who would you recommend we invite?

Without much further ado, here’s the link to the pilot of the Ars Technicast

  3. Movies You Should See: The Wizard of Oz

Join Tristan, Rich, Craig, and Mike as they discuss a film you should see. A group of British 20-somethings (or close enough) who love movies. They do go off topie when discussing the movie of the week but are entertaining no matter what they discuss. One of the few group podcasts I listen to. Warning: though they try to be spoiler-free, they rarely are. Hence, my choice of the classic Wizard of Oz for an example. (http://moviesyoushouldsee.libsyn.com/)

Podcast highlight for the upcoming Episode 80 of Forgotten Classics.
