Before I Get Old: ‘The 27s’ Made Early Exits

All Things Considered, April 5, 2009

Eric Segalstad has spent the past few years researching a group of musicians who have been dubbed "The 27s" — rockers who died at that age, either through tragedy, misadventure or excess. The club includes Kurt Cobain, who took his own life 15 years ago Sunday.

The king of grunge is just one of the more than 20 musicians featured in Segalstad’s book, The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll. It includes artists across all genres — from Jim Morrison to Robert Johnson.

  2. LSUG 520 - The Week That Was 2012 - Segment 1

Hey baby, Little Steven here, and this week in the Underground Garage we are celebrating all kinds of Rock n’ Roll events, including the very first Rock n’ Roll show ever, and the very first Rock n’ Roll hit song as the theme of a movie ever.

How did the kids react to that?

Oh, very calmly. They just ripped the seats out of the theater when they heard it.

That’s right, and joining us for the party will be Chuck Berry, the MC5, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, the Beatles, the Stones, and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

Brand new music from the Chevells, Charles Bradley & the Menahan Street Band, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Prima Donna.

Come find out what Riff, Action, A-Rab, Ice, Baby John, and Anybodys have in common.

It’s the teenage rampage and the birth of Rock n’ Roll this weekend in the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the radio.

I will see you in the blackboard jungle, also known as the Underground Garage.

  3. Run DMC Crashes Rock’s Hall Of Fame, Again

NPR Morning Edition, April 3, 2009

In 1984, MTV began playing a video that poked fun at the idea of rock’s lead status in the music world. It showed RUN DMC — two rappers and a DJ trespassing at an imaginary rock ‘n’ roll museum and causing a holy ruckus. The irony is that, 25 years later, RUN DMC is being welcomed onto that hallowed ground. On Saturday, the group will be inducted into the real Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
