  2. Adam Curtis talking at The Story 2011

In this talk, Curtis discusses the difficulties of storytelling on the internet, issues a challenge to avoid the whimsy of the ‘circle of friends’ that seems to dominate contemporary media culture, and urges us to look beyond the surface of online culture to see the power structures that underpin it. Its a fascinating and challenging talk, exploring many of the themes that he develops in his new BBC 2 series All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace.

  4. “Mad Men” Creator Matthew Weiner

For the second year running, top honors at the Emmys for best dramatic series went to an AMC cable show set in a New York ad agency in the early 1960s.

The visuals of AMC’s “Mad Men” are all skinny ties and bullet bras — buttoned-down corporate America smoking and drinking and dancing on the edge of what we know would be assassinations and war and 1960s cultural revolution to come.

Its world is white, sexist, racist, homophobic, shadowed by fear of nuclear war — and compelling, right now, in 2009.

This hour, On Point: A conversation with Matthew Weiner, creator of “Mad Men.”

  5. Matt Locke: Television and New Media

The variety of new methods for self expression on the internet have led to an overlap between public and private communication and six new kinds of communication spaces have emerged. These are not along a spectrum but rather have different roles and rules governing behavior. When designing a new media service, the important thing is not which medium (TV, internet, etc) it is on. The important thing is to make the architecture of your service match the kind of social space the users expect.

  6. AV Smackdown … The Podcast

On May 6th, at WNYC’s new Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, we opened up an age old can of worms. Jad and Robert faced off over which medium is superior — television or radio. This American Life’s Ira Glass was the referee. There were stunning jabs, wicked uppercuts, and even the occasional low blow. In TV’s corner, Robert “The Krusher” Krulwich hit hard with stunning video images, but audio-savant Jad “Boom Boom” Abumrad pounded his opponent with the power of sound. The bout went five hard rounds and had to go to the cards for a decision. Tears were shed, and after a short intermission Jad and Robert sat down with Ira to discuss the challenges of working in both TV and Radio.
