This dual presentation will explore common play elements in location-based games. We’ll analyze the popular "Check-In" mechanic (used by products like FourSquare and GoWalla), and take a look at the business and social forces that have influenced its emergence as the popular geo game model. The presentation will compare current location-based products, charting their strengths and weaknesses to identify where we believe large areas of opportunity exist in the market. We’ll evaluate the challenges and untapped opportunities of Geo Games from the technological and design perspectives of the two presenters. We’ll outline how the limitations in location technology can be an elegant part of the game design itself, and how new innovations will help to create richer and more immersive parallel worlds. We’ll describe why we think its time to move beyond "social" Check-In systems, to “true games” that engage, challenge, and stimulate players.

If you are curious about Agile development and want an insider view of the activities Agile teams do every day, this session is for you. A special emphasis will be placed on experiential learning through Agile games and exercises, such as "Story Writing" and "Planning Poker," in this hands-on, interactive session. Learn first-hand how games and other Agile tools and techniques can be successfully adopted by project teams, resulting in rapid delivery and improved teamwork. Participants will be strongly encouraged to share their own experiences and learn from each other in this session.
As more devices become location aware, social uses will continue to evolve beyond just who and what, to WHEN. Adding the temporal dimension creates new opportunities for social interaction. Learn about ways to leverage and use technology to add features at the intersection of temporal, social, and location.
Developers and applications have challenges matching the same location between data sources and sharing a location between applications. Why? In this panel, we’ll look at the pros, cons, and challenges of using proprietary, open source, and/or community-built data sets; why there won’t be one location database to rule them all; ways we can all work together to make sure your place is my place when our applications talk to each other; and why all of this is important.
